Chapter Thirty-one

Jennifer

When I get home I noticeRage’s bike in the driveway, which isn’t normal for us. I’m always home before him. He usually arrives just as the kids are getting home or slightly after. I smile, wondering if this is meant to be a surprise for me, but when he greats me at the door he doesn’t look all that happy.

Frowning I ask him, “What’s wrong? Is it one of the kids?” I’ve taken to loving those kids just as if they were my own.

“No, just come in, we need to talk. Since they won’t be home for another hour this is the best time to do this.”

Crossing my arms around my body, I let him lead me to the couch and take a seat.

“We found out information about your parents, it was, indeed, a cover up.” This doesn’t hit me like it should, is it because it’s been so long, or because I already knew the truth. “I know that part isn’t shocking to you, but there is more. Turns out your parents ran the Chicago mafia; they were the leaders and it was a hit that took them out. Your brother got access to their money when he turned eighteen and most of it is gone. There is some left though, and that money is yours once they find your brother’s body.”

He tells me this so quickly I feel like I’m missing something, my head is spinning. My brother had money, but I was shacked up in a cheap-as-shit trailer in the worst part of town. While he lived the high life! Did he just hate me or something? Why did he treat me the way he did? I wish I had answers to those questions but with him being dead, I’ll probably never know.

“We’re leaking his body’s location to the cops, so he’ll be found and you’ll be called back to identify him and collect anything of his that is now yours.” I don’t know what to do with this, it seems too surreal. “Jennifer?”

“I’m fine.” I wave him off when he comes to me. “It’s just a lot to take in. It’s been so long since I lost my parents and now, you’re telling me they were also the bad guys. I never saw that though, I was spoiled by them sure, but I never saw anything but love from them.”

“It’s probably good they kept that part of themselves away from you. I wanted to let you know though, the new leaders of Chicago are being taken out first chance we get. We already have someone on it.”

“Good, revenge is good,” I say, not really thinking. I feel overwhelmed by this. All of this, I need to lay down. I get up and Rage helps me from the couch, pulling me in for a hug. “I’m fine, West, I promise, I just need a lay down is all.”

“Okay, the kids and I will pick up something to eat for tonight. Anything specific you want?”

“No, just surprise me. I’m not fussy.”

He lets me go, giving me a soft kiss and lets me go on upstairs. I make it to the bed and flop down, my head going crazy with everything Rage just told me.

I feel a headache coming on and close my eyes, sleep finds me easily.

IWAKE UP TO SOMEONEtickling my nose. Swatting them away, I groggily open my eyes and see it’s little Kara, who’s just giggling. “What are you up to, monkey?”

“Just wanted to wake you up. Food’s here. Daddy got us something weird, it’s tacos!” she screams that last part and I laugh. God, this kid is cute.

“Alrighty, I’m up, let’s go eat,” I tell her getting out of bed. She tugs on my hand and half drags me out of my room and down the stairs.

“I woke up sleepy beauty!” she yells to the room and Rage looks at her with so much love it makes my heart feel like it’s being squeezed.

Rage turns his warm eyes to me and gives me a small grin. “Good nap?”

I nod, going to him, my arms slink around his middle and I give him a hug.
