Guess it was time for the interrogation to begin.

Chapter3

Sean

Sean studied the woman in front of him with a mixture of amusement and disbelief. The last time he’d seen Liv, she’d been an awkward teenager trying to find her way in the fucked up world of high school. The daily letters from her while he was deployed had been a welcome escape filled with funny stories and childish daydreams of making it big as a singer.

It was probably those letters that had extended his patience with her sister Amelia’s many flaws making the relationship last longer than it should’ve. The deathblow to their relationship had been coming home early from leave to find she’d moved another man into his house.

Ten years had changed Liv in many ways. She was still tiny, but her curves had filled out and she held a delicate beauty. The fire in her eyes when she’d asked him to play along with the ridiculous lie had piqued his interest. Had she really been trying to slip something into his pocket? There wasn’t anything in his jacket to steal, but he’d acted on reflex when he felt her hand slipping into the fabric.

A glance down at her dark waves of hair was all it took to realize she was the woman he’d seen approaching the D.A. earlier. How was she mixed up in this mess and how had she gotten a recording of the drug deal? Things may have changed, but he couldn’t believe the sweet girl he remembered would get caught up in the ugly world of drugs.

“Sit.” He gestured to the chairs. They needed to untangle this mess.

Liv’s eyes narrowed. Then she hopped up and sat on the table. She put her hands up like paws and made an adorable barking noise. Sean sighed and stepped forward, towering over her. How could she be so adorable and exasperating all at the same time? He snatched the USB drive out of the hand she’d conveniently brought back into his line of sight.

“Hey! That’s mine.”

He dropped it into his inside jacket pocket. “And you were slipping it into my pocket. Why? How did you get a recording of a drug deal?”

Color tinged her pale cheeks as she looked down and played with the edge of her skirt. The urge to slide that skirt up and slip between her legs was powerful. She held an innocent appeal that was like a siren’s call to him. The fact that she was in over her head but couldn’t see it was frustrating. Getting involved with drug cartels was a dangerous business.

“It doesn’t matter how I got it.” Her voice was soft, and Sean missed the defiant spark she’d shown earlier. “I heard you talking on the phone. You’re trying to prove your client wasn’t involved. If he’s not in that video, then you can prove it.”

Her evasive answers made him nervous. How deeply involved was she and how much danger was she in? He tilted her chin up so he could see her eyes. “It does matter. What are you mixed up in Liv? Do you need help?”

The pain in her gaze made him want to gather her up and promise that everything would be ok.

“Look, I want the people in that video to get what is coming to them. That’s all you need to know.”

Sean sighed. “Who’s on the video?”

“Luis Soto.” She practically spat out the name.

Sean hid his wince. He didn’t know a lot about the Soto Cartel but guessed someone with the same last name was probably high up. “I’ll do what I can after I find somewhere to view it. No promises. What were you going to do with the recording before you heard me talking?”

“I was going to give it to the attorney in charge of the case. But then I saw him being cozy with Soto’s lawyer.”

“Just because they were talking doesn’t mean they are cozy.”

Liv snorted. “Sure.”

Not wanting to get into a discussion about the way lawyers worked, Sean circled back to what he needed to understand. “What’s your problem with Luis Soto?”

“Other than he’s a scumbag who sells drugs and women?”

“Yeah.”

Her eyes went cold, and it was hard to see such anger and hate in eyes he remembered sparkling with happiness. “He killed Amelia.”

The information hit him like a slap. He didn’t love Amelia. He never had. She’d been a self-centered wild spirit who’d been young and dumb. That didn’t mean her sister didn’t loved her deeply. Sean sighed. Amelia getting caught up in the drug world didn’t surprise him, he just wished she hadn’t dragged Liv along with her.

“I’m sorry. When did it happen?”

“Two years ago. Luis got off on a claim of self-defense.”

“Did she have a weapon?” Amelia had been a small woman like Liv. It was hard to picture how any man could have needed deadly force to protect himself against her.
