“And later today, you’re meeting Steven Hargrove.”

“Perfect,” he said.

Kira nodded. They’d arrived from Texas a couple of days prior, and he’d been catching up at work. He’d also shot Samantha a text, asking her if she’d considered his offer. Right now, his goal was to move to the second phase of his professional pursuit. Once she took a look at his projections and the kind of leverage he’d bring, she’d be in. Not to mention the team of experienced professionals.

His phone buzzed, and he glanced at it.

Well, well… Come to my place for lunch. Today. You’ll have thirty minutes.

A text from Samantha herself. He doubted thirty minutes would be enough, but it was progress from their last conversation. Besides, this meant she was biting… He’d piqued her interest.

I’ll be there, he replied.

“Any good news?” Kira asked.

A lump grew in his throat. “I heard back from my hairdresser. He fit me in at lunch,” he said, telling her the first thing that came to mind. Truth be told, he needed a haircut, and right now, if he lied about something business related, most likely she’d catch on. A sharp ache twisted in his chest, guilt eating him up inside. But he’d come too far to change now.

“Really? I was hoping we’d have lunch together,” she said, a trace of disappointment in her voice.

“I want to be on the top of my game for my meeting later. We’ll have dinner together.”

“Great, but you mean at a restaurant and with clothes on, right?”

He ran his finger along her nose, then kissed it. “You’re no fun.”

She wrinkled her nose at him, and he took the cue and left, heading to the long hallway leading to the elevators. After he pressed the button, his father walked up to him, coming from his office.

“Busy day?” his father asked in French.

“Yes.”

His father nodded, then looked at him in silence.

Luc fished out his phone and pretended to read his emails. He never knew what to do when he was next to his father without a buffer zone, or an extra person. Or talking about the future of the technology for the Montague corporation.

“You know, Luc, maybe we could do something this weekend. Go golfing then grab a drink after.”

Luc swallowed. Was his father trying to spend time with him and get to know him, or did he simply become suspicious of his dealings? Maybe Samantha had told him the truth—that he’d looked for her and was trying to steal the deal right from under his father’s nose. “Sure. That sounds like a good idea,” he said.

His father smiled. “Great. I think it’ll be good for us.” Then he turned around and left, returning to his office. Leaving Luc in a mix of confusion and frustration.

Kira glanced at the clock.

Seven p.m.

She took the glass of white wine she’d poured earlier, and willed herself to relax, but that proved difficult. Where the hell was her husband?

He’d gone from his hair appointment straight to the meeting, and he’d texted her that it ran late. She finished her work and used the car service and came home to change. They had reservations at 7:30, but there was no way they’d make it with traffic.

Her phone rang. Maybe it was Luc?

She rushed it to the kitchen counter and scooped it from the smooth marble surface. Disappointment lowered her shoulders and extracted a sigh from her the moment she saw Richard’s face on her screen. “Hello?”

“Oh, hi Kira. Is Luc with you? I tried his cell, but he didn’t answer.”
