“You got the box I sent earlier, didn’t you?” I ask.

“I did. And it’s… I’m not sure what it’s for.”

“It’s for you to wear because we’re going out tonight.”

“I can’t go out tonight,” she says. “I—I have things to do. I’m sorry but it’s just not a good night for me, Silas.”

A smirk curls the corners of my lips and I look up at her building, imagining what she’s doing in her apartment right now. She’s not working tonight, and she doesn’t have much else going on in her life so I can’t imagine that she’s doing much other than reading one of the dozens of books I saw in her place. I like that she reads as much as she does.

“Put it on and come downstairs,” I say.

“Wait…are you…are you outside my building?”

“I am. And I’m waiting for you, so get dressed and come down.”

“Silas, I can’t—”

“Forgive me for saying so, but you don’t exactly have a slammed social calendar so I’m pretty sure you can. Now, get dressed and come down.”

I disconnect the call and drop my phone into my pocket. Crossing my arms over my chest, I lean back against my car, my eyes darting left and right. From where I stand, I can see people selling drugs, half a dozen guys who’ve got guns on them, and at least a dozen other crimes happening. A few of the guys are eyeballing me, hard expressions on their faces. They’re sizing me up and seem to be trying to decide if the money in my wallet and my Rolex are worth the beating they’ll take if they try to roll me.

They ultimately decide to move along. It’s a good choice. This neighborhood is a warzone. I don’t like the fact that Aria is living in a place where there are strung out junkies laying in puddles of their own shit and piss in the gutter and a woman like her could be raped and murdered on the stoop over her apartment building. Yeah, I’m aware that can happen anywhere. I get it. But in neighborhoods like this, where the cops don’t come often and the real power in the streets is with the people who’ve got the biggest guns, it’s far more common. To think otherwise is just stupid.

It takes a little while, but a wide grin stretches across my lips when I see Aria step out of her building and cross the sidewalk to me, an awkward smile on her full, red lips. The skirt of the dress falls just above her knee and clings to the swell of her hips tantalizingly. Thin straps come over her shoulders and the neckline of the dress plunges, cradling her round, full breasts and offering a delicious view of her ample cleavage.

The Sacramento green color of the dress contrasts and yet compliments her rust-colored hair and smooth, alabaster complexion beautifully. Black stockings, green strappy heels, and a small black clutch complete her outfit, and I can’t take my eyes off her. The way the dress hugs her curves and accents her body makes my heart stutter drunkenly in my chest. My cock stiffening, I lick my lips and swallow hard, forcing myself to look her in the eye.

Aria holds her hands out and gives me a little spin to show off the dress I picked up and had sent to her. Just watching her tempts me to cancel our reservation and spend the night deep inside of her. All I want at this moment is to lay her down, push that skirt up, and plunge my cock into her warm, wet depths. But I know I need to be patient.

“Well worth the wait,” I say.

“So, did you pick this out yourself? Or did you have somebody do it for you?”

“I picked it out myself.”

“Well, I have to say, your taste is exquisite.”

“I know what I like,” I say, meeting and holding her gaze for a long moment. “And I know what will look good on you. It’s kind of my superpower.”

She laughs softly and steps forward, brushing a bit of lint off the lapels of my jacket and straightening my tie. She’s standing so close, I can feel the heat of her body and smell the subtle fragrance she’s wearing. My body is tense and if she steps any closer, she’s going to feel just how much I appreciate that dress on her. As it is, it’s taking every last bit of my self-control to not bend her over the hood of my car and take her right now.

“Well, you’re a pretty snappy dresser, I’ll give you that,” she says with a flirty smile that makes my cock twitch. “So, you mind telling me what this is all about?”

I open the passenger side door for her. “Get in and find out.”

Aria looks down at herself then raises her head and holds my gaze for a long moment, a serious expression on her face.

“Thank you for the dress, Silas,” she says. “I’ve never had something this nice before.”

“A beautiful woman needs a beautiful dress.”

Her smile is soft and a little sad at the same time, but she leans forward and plants a gentle kiss on my cheek. Her lips are soft and warm, and it feels like they’ve left an imprint that’s on fire in their wake. My pulse quickens and that impulse to be inside of her grows so thick I feel like I’m choking on it.

She slips into the passenger seat, and I close the door then walk around to the driver’s side, ignoring the hard looks from the guys on the stoop across the street. I get behind the wheel then fire up my car and take off. The faster I can get Aria out of here and away from the reminders of the dismal existence she’s leading, the better. Once we’re on the freeway and I’m pointed south, I turn to her.

“We’re going to need to do something about your living situation,” I announce.

A wan smile touches her lips. “Sure, I’ll just go by a mansion next door to yours and we can be neighbors,” she says. “Or wait, I know. Maybe I’ll just move into your castle high up in the hills. What do you think?”
