Prologue

Kimberly

It was the first day at my new school and I was nervous. The place looked nice and empty when I’d seen the brochures. I thought to myself, this is manageable. What I didn’t realize was that it wasn’t that way at all. There were people everywhere now and nothing looked the same as it did on the map. I turned it over and over in my hands, trying to see what I was supposed to see. I was going to be late for class, I was close to tears, and I was only about thirty minutes into my day.

“Do you need some help?”

This hot guy with a football jacket on came up to me, and he had the sexiest smile on his face. I was huffing and puffing, trying to figure out what I was doing, and this Adonis walked over all casually. I fixed my hair, pulling the blonde strands from my face, like that was going to help. Like that was going to stop this guy from seeing what I mess I was.

“Yes, please.”

I could also think of a few other things that I wouldn’t mind him doing for me. His dark eyes were brown and had flecks of gold in them. His smile was wide, full lips, straight, white teeth. His biceps were big, like really big, and I wanted to reach out and touch one. They didn’t look real and they couldn’t be.

He touched my bracelet. “Are you the new soccer recruit I’ve heard about?”

He let go and I touched the metal that was now warm from his touch. Why did I want to shake inside? I didn’t even know him. The soccer ball gave me away on the other.

“Yeah, I just came in today, and I am supposing to be getting to Interpersonal Communications class.”

“That’s a mouthful.”

I snickered, feeling self-conscious, and not sure what I needed help with anymore. I melted into his eyes; the musky scent was aromatic. God, he looked good. This was how men in college were supposed to be, letter jacket and all.

“So, do you have your schedule?”

“Huh?”

“There are two of them, two different teachers and places. I can help you find it, but we need to know which one first.”

“Right.”

I smiled and tried not to let my shaking hands give me away. I was searching in my pocket for the folded piece of paper and he made fun of me for it.

“What?”

“Nothing, just a good place to put such an important piece of paper.”

I didn’t comment and just handed him the wrinkled mess. I wasn’t myself, especially not at the moment. I didn’t usually feel flustered, but I did now.

“Ah, you’ve got Simons. Come on then…”

“Kimberly.”

“My name is Dennis, Kimberly. It’s nice to meet you.”

I shook his hand, still not sure how I had gotten into this situation. He told me to follow him and I did. Dennis was the sort of man that people looked to for leadership. I felt like I was in good hands, and I knew then that this was the very moment that I started my crush on Dennis. Little did I know, though, because of that chance meeting, my life was never going to be the same again.
