Dennis

Ipoured the wine and then sat back. Kimberly was lucky that the waitress came and brought the appetizers. I couldn’t believe Kimberly sometimes. For someone so smart, she acted like an idiot a lot of the time. She really thought that I wanted to hear any of that. I didn’t believe a word of it and as soon as the waitress left, I told her so.

“What don’t you believe?”

“Any of it. You really think that we are only friends?”

“We’ve kissed, Dennis, once. That doesn’t necessarily put us in line for marriage, does it?”

“No, but considering the fact that your wet and I’m hard right now, middle of public, tells me that we’re denying what is right in front us. I know that you can feel it too.”

She sighed and took another sip. I wanted to remind her of the last time she drank, but I preferred that version than the Kimberly that didn’t even want to consider us being together a possibility. Why was I so determined to make her see it my way?

I figured it was just me being selfish. I wanted her and I would have said about anything to have her like I wanted her.

“This is really good. Definitely a step up from the fish eggs, but I don’t know. I think the chocolate still won out.”

I watched her for a moment and then stopped the musicians from walking over to play. It was supposed to be romantic, but it wasn’t the time. I didn’t know when, but I needed it to be time with Kimberly, and soon. Not having her was driving me crazy. I wanted to get there, or at least I wanted to start moving in the right direction.

We finished dinner without the great conclusion that I thought we would arrive at. I apparently still had some work to do, but that was okay, I had more to come.

“Why doyou keep taking me to this creepy house? I was joking about the chocolate, Dennis. It was good, but not enough to go all the way out here again.”

“I thought that we would play a game.”

She sighed. “I feel like this is the start of a low-budget film. Does your game include cameras?”

I laughed at her comments. She was always funnier when she added this dubious expression she’d perfected. The awkwardness from dinner was gone and I was thankful for that.

“No, but we can always add those in later if you like.”

She blew out a breath dramatically and we walked to the house that we’d came to last time we’d gone out together. I’d made some changes, though, and I was hopeful that she would like what I’d done with the place. I wanted to think that she was going to be impressed. A limo hadn’t done it, so I was just going to have to up my game. Dinner at the restaurant hadn’t either.

When we got inside, I didn’t say anything. I wanted to see her reaction more than anything. She was looking at me and then back at the row of screens that had been set up, as well as the Mrs. Packman arcade game in the corner. It was her favorite, or at least that’s what she had said before when I’d asked.

“Oh my god. What have you done?”

“I set this up. You asked if we had a game to play before.”

She was walking slowly, like there were scared puppies ahead of her. “Oh my god, I was talking about a board game or something. Where did this all come from? How did you get it out here?”

I shrugged. “I’ve said many times before, money smooths out everything.”

“You know, I usually don’t like when you do this sort of thing, but how can I not like this?”

I was glad that she was happy. She had gotten to the arcade game and she looked back. “You want to play?”

“You go first.’”

Kimberly rocked back and forth while she played, and it was good to lighten the mood. It felt heavy between us and this was just what we needed. Where it was going to lead, I hadn’t a clue, but at least she was smiling. I would do about anything I could to see that smile more often.

We drove backto the dorm and I had forgotten that I wasn’t supposed to drop her off right in the front. I knew that for a long time, we had practiced the drop off and meeting place far away for a reason, but we’d been talking too much, and I hadn’t been paying attention.
