“No.”

Marcus whines loudly as I push open Sidney’s door. I’m immediately greeted by Hay meowing and swishing her tail down by my feet.

“I’m hanging up now.”

“You suck! Oh, I forgot to tell you, Pammy switched—”

I wince when I hang up on Marcus midsentence. Technically, I started the hang-up process during the “you suck” portion of the phone call, so I can’t be held accountable for this.

Shoving my phone into my back pocket, I toss my keys on top of Sidney’s dryer along with the three boxes I brought with me, before bending down to give Hay a few head scratches.

The fact that Sidney was overheard talking about our kiss with Callie around town today gives me hope that she’s not planning on pretending it never happened. I’m not letting her run away from me again until she starts paying attention and understands everything.

The way she responded to that kiss has had my head spinning since she ran away from me. Whether she’s confused or not about what happened on that porch, she couldn’t hide how much she liked kissing me and how absolutely okay she was with crossing that friendship line. I can still feel her hands clawing at my back to pull me closer, the needy whimpers she breathed into my mouth, and the way her hot little body came alive right against mine.

I’ve been dealing with one headache after another all day today. I didn’t intentionally set out to avoid Sidney, it just happened. It killed me every second I was away from her, wondering where her head was at, but I figured she needed some time to stop freaking out. This is all new to her. Going from nothing but friendship for six years and crossing a line into something more. What felt like an eternity for me probably felt like the blink of an eye for her. She needed some time to adjust, and I had to give her that. It didn’t mean I had to stay away from her completely.

A few late shoe arrivals I ordered for Sidney somehow got sent to my address by mistake, so I figured I’d just sneak them into her closet shoe rack while she’s at work. Marcus finishing at the bar means Sidney will be home soon, and I plan on parking myself on her couch and waiting for her to get home so we can talk.

Standing back up after Hay decides she’s had enough head scratches and darts out of the room, I grab the boxes of shoes off the dryer and walk out into the kitchen.

“How are you not sick of talking about this already?I’msick of talking about it, and it happened to me.”

My feet come to a skidding stop in the middle of the dark kitchen with just the glow from Sidney’s Halloween village up on top of the cabinets to see by, when I hear her voice coming from the living room, followed by Callie’s laugh.

“Shit,” I mutter under my breath, realizing I hung up on Marcus right when he must have been about to tell me our waitress Pammy switched one of her shifts with Sidney tonight.

The fact that her car wasn’t in the driveway makes me wonder what kind of shit she got into while she wasn’t working this evening. The next words out of Callie’s mouth make those worries disappear in the blink of an eye.

“You are such a liar. There’s drool on your chin every time you even think about that kiss. You won’t be sick of talking about it for a hundred years.”

My cheeks hurt from smiling so hard, hearing that Sidney is still talking about our kiss.

If I were a better man, I would immediately make my presence known. But I’m not a better man. I’m a sick, desperate bastard who just wants to know how freaked out Sidney is that I kissed her. If she’s planning on avoiding me and not letting me fix things for her again.

“Just admit you came back here and pulled out your vibrator after that kiss.”

My dick perks up, and my hands start sweating at just the mental image of Sidney using a vibrator, let alone Sidney using a vibrator because ofme.

“Have you listened to anything we’ve discussed today? There was no vibrator needed. Just a few swipes of my fingers and I came screaming Ford’s name.”

Jesus Christ.

My hand immediately darts out to clutch onto the edge of the counter next to me before my goddamn knees give out.

Definitely didn’t expectthosewords out of her mouth.

“Your uptightness over the last twenty-four hours tells me it wasn’t as satisfying or stress-relieving as it should have been.”

“It never is.” Sidney lets out a huge sigh.

I can hear the rustle of pillows on her couch, picturing her throwing her body back into them in defeat. I don’t expect the surge of jealousy that rushes through me. Knowing she ran away from me after that kiss just to come home and pleasure herself, when I would have happily done that job for her in a much more satisfying way, makes me want to throw my fist through a wall at the unfairness of it all.

“Ford has starred in all of your masturbation fantasies for the entire six years you’ve known him. Stop dreaming when you can have the real thing.”

“Stop making sense when you drank an entire bottle of wine.”

The boxes of shoes I’m still holding under one arm drop right to the ground with a loudthudof cardboard hitting tile and the clatter of them opening and spilling at my feet.
