Page 51 of Stop Ghosting Me

A muscle tics in Ford’s jaw, but the stormy look in his eyes is gone in a flash, replaced with a smirk right before he dips his head and puts his mouth right by my ear.

“I won’t tell anyone if you want to make it a two-time thing. It can be our little secret.” He presses a kiss against the side of my neck, making it feel like he put those lips right between my legs, and I can’t stop myself from squirming on top of this hay bale. “But if you expect me to be able to go back tobeforeand forget how hard you came for me, you’re out of your goddamn mind. I can use more than just my fingers to get you there next time.”

“Jesus,” I mutter, trying not to pant as I pull back from him, glancing quickly around to make sure everyone is preoccupied with the screen in front of us. “Stop… stop saying things like that.”

“Stop acting like I don’t know how wet you get when I say things like that.”

“Sorry! Could I get a quick picture?”

Ford immediately turns away from me when a tourist walks up to him, whispering loudly while waving his phone around.

“I’m not doing a fucking handstand.”

The man laughs nervously at Ford’s gruff response. “No, no, just a picture! I don’t… I don’t think that uniform could survive a handstand.”

With an annoyed sigh, Ford leans over as the man squats down and holds his phone up in front of them, all while I stare off in a daze, wondering what the hell he’s doing to me. He either didn’t understand the words I said to him, or he just doesn’t give a shit.

I shouldn’t like it that he’s calling my bluff instead of agreeing with the crap that came out of my mouth. It shouldn’t warm up everything cold inside me that he refuses to back down. Even if he’s just looking for a hook-up while he’s here, it shouldn’t feel so exciting that he wants it withme.

“You’re not paying attention.”

My body jolts when Ford’s mouth is suddenly right by my ear again.

“You’re still not paying attention, are you?”

The words he said to me last night start banging around in my head. My heart starts pounding and my chest feels tight, and I have no idea why.

“What?”

The corner of Ford’s mouth tips up into a grin, and he points toward the screen. “The movie. It started. You’re not paying attention.”

Sure, yeah… the movie.

Just like friendly Ford and Sidney have always done, he throws an arm over my shoulders, and we start watching the movie together. Except unlike how we’ve always done it, every single cell in my body is aware of him. How close he’s sitting, how good he smells, and how easy it would be to grab his hand and pull him over into the corn maze so I could take him up on his offer. Start christening every place in this town where I’ve had fantasies about him.

Thankfully, the theme song fromWhat We Do in the Shadowsstarts blasting from the back pocket of my jeans fifteen minutes into the movie, before I do something stupid. Leaning away from Ford, I pull my phone out and quickly cut off the noise when a bunch of people turn around and shush me.

“Sorry to bother you, Sid; I know you’re out at Diederich’s farm,” Ricki Arnold, the owner of the florist shop, greets me as soon as I say hello. “I thought you might want to know that I just saw Penny and Ginger zipping out of town while I was here at the shop working late on a wedding order.”

Quickly glancing over to the hay bale where I last saw Penny and Ginger, I see two tourists are now sitting in their spots.

“Shit,” I mutter.

Ford’s arm tightens around my shoulders, and he leans forward to study me with a concerned look on his face, making my stomach flop.

God, he’s always so worried about me. Why does it have to feel so good?

“Sorry, Sid,” Ricki repeats sheepishly, reminding me I’m on the phone as I blink away from Ford’s stare. “They were also driving a big white van I didn’t recognize.”

“Oh God. That could mean anything. There could be a body in the back of that van.”

“What?”

“The fuck?” Ricki and Ford say at the same time, one in each of my ears.

With a quick thank-you to her for giving me a heads up, I end the call and shove my phone back into my pocket.

“Let me guess. The twins of terror?”
