I heard the door open and was already shaking my head. "No need for company," I growled.

Flavia showed up at my side, which surprised me. Of all those present, I had least expected her. She had only been here a year and now she thought she had some influence?

"I just wanted to let you know I tried to convince him to do everything in his power. He has the contacts. If he wanted to, he could find them within a few hours. But it would cost him."

I turned my head away so she wouldn't see me roll my eyes. "Oh yeah, like I didn't know that. I was just about to put my men on it."

"It's still not the same."

That was the most unnecessary comment I had ever heard out of her mouth.

Amused, I shook my head. "No. You know what, I think my people are better."

Before she could interrupt me again, I sprinted down the steps into the garden and put distance between me and her. Even as I ran, my finger was already back on the call button.

It rang only twice before Silvio answered. "What's up, boss?"

"A special assignment," I replied, trying to figure out how I could most skillfully mount the search.

"DARIO!" Vincenzo roared.Merda.

"Wait, I'll call you back in a minute," I growled, turning around just in time to see Vince coming toward me. There was a scowl on his face.

"Didn't know I was grounded," I said after he reached me.

"No escalations. I made myself clear. That includes your hobby club."

"My hobby club?!" I repeated incredulously.

"That's right. Emilio didn't do what I asked him to do, but he put that computer genius on the case."

I stared at him. "You mean Amedea."

"I don't care what her name is. Emilio is confident she can track her down. You should have faith in that."

"Admittedly it’s very hard for me to do after he kept it from me that the guy was alive after all. Or whatever other knowledge he had."

"He didn't know he was alive. But he knew that a few of his cronies are in the country."

So my research had not been on the wrong track at all. I should only have carried them out more intensively.

"How long?"

"He gave her three hours."

"Good. Three hours, not a minute more. When the time is up, it's in my hands. No one gets in my way, Vince." I looked at him, still visibly carrying the smartphone.

One phone call and the town was upside down.

"Fine. For the three hours, you keep your feet still. No stupid decisions."

Somehow I couldn't shake the feeling that we were haggling over a lot more than just when I could go into action.

"Okay. Three hours."

I did not know how I was going to survive these one hundred and eighty minutes without going mad, but I would manage. The idea of what assholes Gia was exposed to kept haunting me.

I knew all too well how such kidnappings went. How the torture was carried out and how small the chances were of surviving more than six hours– and here we were talking about full-grown, powerful men who had been trained for such situations. Gia had nothing to counter these guys with.
