"I get it. Nothing will happen, but if it does I'll wake you up."

I nodded grateful, grabbed the pills and my water bottle, and crept out of the bedroom.

Even on my first night here, the first time I had gotten involved with Dario, I had not slept in his bed, but on the couch. So now, it felt strange to enter his bedroom alone, throw back the covers and snuggle under them without him even being around.

I slid into the middle so I could turn on the bedside lamp on his side, and then turned over, one pillow tucked between my legs and another under my arm.

Before I tried to fall asleep, I took two of the painkillers and placed them within reach in case I woke up again in the next few hours.

I still carried the smartphone in my pocket and would not put it down. It was the same fear that made me want to sleep with the light on... and I hoped Dario was right and it wouldn't take long for me to get rid of this irrational panic.

Dario

Carlotta flattened herself on the couch opposite my armchair, her eyes fixed on Natale, who was taking up most of her seat, so that she had to rest her legs on his lap.

She didn't seem to mind, especially since she was just about to keep pestering me with questions I didn't want to give her answers to.

"Somehow I'm surprised you left her alone at all."

"She's not alone," I replied.

I trusted Casimiro with my life. He would protect Gia just as conscientiously as he always ensured my safety.

Carlotta raised an eyebrow. "Oh yeah, who did you put on her?"

"Three of my people," I replied without lifting my eyes from my smartphone. There were a few problems at the club and I was getting live updates, so I stayed in the loop while I was stuck here.

"Your people?"

"Club staff," I grumbled.

"They make good bodyguards?"

I rolled my eyes. "Have mastered it brilliantly in the past few years at least, on countless occasions."

Today wasn't the day I was going to be bragging to her and the others about how I acquired my men and the training they went through before I even let them work at the club– or anywhere else for that matter.

The men existed. And that was all that had mattered so far.

"How long are Vince and Emilio going to keep us waiting?" I wanted to know, a little bored, before she could ask me another question about the men or Gia.

Natale stayed out of the conversation, and Carlotta didn't mind the wait. She seemed to be very reserved in this respect.

I wondered if she had hurt herself in the explosion after all, or if Emilio had made it clear to her what he thought of her decision. I gritted my teeth in a pitiful attempt not to ask her about it.

"There were no other injuries earlier, were there?"

"A few scratches here and there, but no bullet wounds or other serious wounds." She raised her eyes. "Now it’s official– we’re better than Emilio. He would have caught at least one bullet if he had been there."

With the number of shots that had been fired at us, that could have easily happened.

"Good," I muttered.

"And Gia?"

"Nothing related to the rescue operation," I replied. I still had to swallow when I thought about the fact that she had taken a leap over the parapet and into the depths in a desperate attempt to save herself.
