“Would you like me to place you down now?” he asked, wondering if having her autonomy would make her feel better.

She nodded against his chest, still clinging to him, as if her nod had been untrue.

“Shall I carry you just as far as the house?” he offered.

“No,” she whispered. “No, I’ll be fine.”

She wiggled a bit, and he let her slide slowly down his body.

The movement set his own senses on fire, and he prayed she would not be offended at the obvious evidence of his desire.

This is why we are here, to mate and conceive a child.

It still seemed inappropriate to desire her so terribly when she was so scared.

She tilted her head up to meet his eyes. Hers were large, the deepest chocolate brown in color, and slightly hazy, as if she felt it too, the pull between them.

“Let’s go in,” he said, clearing his throat.

It was the most natural thing in the world to wrap his hand around hers as they headed up the steps to the house.

“Put your hand on the sensor,” he suggested.

She placed her free palm against the glass, and the door slid open instantly to reveal a modern-style mountain house.

The living space was all open, with a crackling fire beside the big dining table.

“Wow,” she murmured. “It’s like something out of the holo-films.”

She dashed off to the door that must be the bedroom, and his excitement only grew at the thought of what they would be doing in there.

“It’s enormous,” she called back to him.

You have no idea…

He glanced past her into a room that seemed like most other bedrooms to him. It hit Gage suddenly that inadvertently living along with his employers’ lifestyle for so many years had spoiled him.

The house was incredible. And the view over the forest was exquisite.

Nearly as exquisite as Naomi’s awestruck smile as she walked back to join him.

“I guess this is no big deal for you,” she said, her expression turning wry and teasing.

“It’s beautiful,” he said, not taking his eyes off her. “This is definitely a big deal.”

The air seemed to go out of the room as he realized that he was talking about more than just the view. He was talking about the time they would spend together, and the purpose of their visit.

And unbeknownst to Naomi, he was also thinking of his intense attraction to her, and what it might mean.

She’s not your mate, his wiser angels reminded him. You just haven’t taken care of your physical needs lately.

“Let’s check out our dinner,” he suggested, indicating the dining table in the open living space.

She headed over, an expectant look on her face.

He enjoyed seeing that she was enthusiastic about eating. Many Maltaffian women seemed to be uninterested in food, or at least pretended to be.

Athena came to stand by his side, her warm weight pressed to his knee.
