Naomi moved to the door and opened it, not sure how Athena would react.

“Hey there,” the woman said in a friendly way. “Hope it’s not too early. Oberon let me know you were awake.”

“Not at all,” Naomi replied, stepping aside to allow the small woman into the house.

Apparently, Naomi’s judgement was good enough for Athena. The dog looked suspiciously at them both for a moment, then paced to the bedroom door and lowered herself back down into a perfect sitting guard position, like a stone gargoyle on a gothic library.

“I’m Dr. Pan,” the woman said. “And you must be Naomi. I’m here for your daily check-up.”

“Nice to meet you,” Naomi said, smiling and feeling a little embarrassed that in spite of the amazing time she’d had last night, there was literally no way she was pregnant today.

“I’ll visit with you every morning that you’re here,” Dr. Pan said. “We do our check-ups even in the early days, when the chance of pregnancy is extremely rare.

“That’s fine,” Naomi said, hoping her worries hadn’t shown on her face.

“How are you feeling today?” Dr. Pan asked.

“Physically?” Naomi asked.

“And mentally,” Dr. Pan said. “How are you feeling in general?”

“I feel great,” Naomi said honestly. “Is that strange?”

“Not at all, Naomi,” the doctor said with an approving smile. “What’s the main thing taking up your headspace this morning?”

“I guess just… whether things will work out here,” she said, deciding at the last minute not to say what she was actually thinking about.

Gage, Gage, Gage…

“So today you’re mainly thinking about the future?” Dr. Pan asked.

“Yes,” Naomi replied. “I guess I am.”

It felt good to be thinking about the future, even if the future was just tonight.

She had been so worried about work and her failures at the fertility clinic for so long.

“Wonderful,” Dr. Pan said. “Let’s get your vitals as soon as you’re ready, and then I’ll get out of your way.”

“Now is good,” Naomi said.

The doctor moved around the island and held a sensor to Naomi’s forehead.

“Temperature is normal,” Dr. Pan said, as her bracelet recorded the results. “Heart rate is normal, blood sugar normal, blood pressure normal.”

The hologram above her bracelet shifted and flashed as she went. Her fingers moved gracefully in the air.

“Are you in any pain right now?” Dr. Pan asked, turning back to Naomi, with a serious look in her eyes.

“None,” Naomi told her, wondering if pain was common.

Then she thought to what she hadn’t done for the first time last night with Gage, and felt her cheeks go hot.

“That’s fine,” Dr. Pan said. “It’s very good.”

Naomi smiled at the other woman, feeling suddenly surprised and grateful that Dr. Pan was a Terran of about her age.

Terrans didn’t often have high positions intergalactically. And Dr. Pan seemed to be at home in hers.
