Gage moved to Naomi’s side, wrapping an arm around her shoulders as Dr. Pan removed the sensor.

“You are expecting,” Dr. Pan said.

Naomi barely managed not to scream with excitement.

Gage pressed his lips to her hair and squeezed her tight.

“Maltaffian pregnancies are notoriously fast,” Dr. Pan warned them. “Usually not more than a week or two from start to finish.”

“A week,” Naomi echoed.

“You’ll want to eat as much as you can,” Dr. Pan said. “It won’t be hard. You’ll crave food constantly. Just obey the cravings.”

“Yes,” Naomi said, suddenly feeling almost faint with hunger.

“Make sure she has everything she wants and needs,” Dr. Pan said, turning to Gage. “You’ll stay here until the birth, so we can assist you with everything. But it’s your job to be alert and listen to her.”

“It is my honor to help in any way I can,” Gage said.

“I think I smell breakfast,” Dr. Pan said with a smile. “That’s a good start.”

“Would you like to join us?” Gage offered.

“I have another visit to take care of this morning,” she told them. “But thank you for the offer. Oberon is with you day and night, and I can be here anytime. Just let him know if you need me.”

“Congratulations to you,” Oberon said softly.

“Thank you both,” Naomi said, meaning it with all her heart. “This feels like a happy dream.”

The lights in the room glowed a little brighter for a moment.

Then Dr. Pan gave them a friendly wave and headed out the door.

“Breakfast time, little mate,” Gage said to Naomi.

“Not without Athena,” she said, heading over to the hover bed and sliding her fingers along the sensors to program it to follow her bracelet.

Athena leaned over and gave her casual lick on the cheek.

“I can see someone has a new best friend.”

Gage’s tone was teasing, but he looked so happy that it made Naomi’s heart throb.

Naomi

A few days later, Naomi sat by the edge of the pool, with Gage rubbing her swollen feet.

Her belly was growing so swiftly that she just found it easier to spend most of her time naked. Dr. Pan had assured them that making love would not harm the baby. With her in a perpetual state of undress, and Gage constantly by her side, they were happily riding out the tail end of the mating frenzy.

The obvious joy he took in caring for her seemed to light him up from within like a star.

Gage had just lowered his mouth to nuzzle her thighs when she sensed Athena waking up beside her.

If Gage was her sun and moon, then Athena was her shadow. Naomi had tended to the recovering canine just as Gage tended to her.

Now the two were inseparable.
