At last, her daughter was bundled in a cotton blanket and tucked into her arms.

“Hello,” Naomi whispered, gazing down at the beautiful little face.

Leandra was the same pale green as her father, with tiny horn nubs on top of her head. And she had dark eyes and a little fluff of dark hair on her head, just like her mother.

Her small green hand caught onto Naomi’s finger and each gazed at the other in wonder.

The staff quietly disappeared, leaving the family of three holding each other close.

Naomi closed her eyes and tried to memorize the sweet joy she felt, with her daughter in her arms and her mate wrapped around her.

A cold, wet snout at her thigh reminded her it wasn’t just the three of them.

“Hey, Athena,” Naomi said softly. “What does my best friend think of my daughter?”

Athena sniffed at the baby’s blanket, a solemn expression in her lovely eyes. After a moment, she lay down at Naomi’s feet, not in the sprawled-out way she had begun napping in after her injury, or in the curled-up ball she favored at the foot of their bed at night, but in a symmetrical and ready position, like a sphinx.

“That’s her work position,” Gage murmured. “She considers herself on duty now.”

“Wow,” Naomi said.

“Just a warning that she adores kids,” Gage chuckled. “She might be someone else’s shadow now.”

“Our best friendship was short-lived,” Naomi said with a wry smile.

“That’s okay, my mate,” Gage murmured, nuzzling her hair. “You’ll always have me.”

She let her head fall back against his warm chest and soaked in the feeling of family. She was right where she was supposed to be.

“Forever,” she whispered to him.

“Forever and ever,” he promised.
