“Because I want to,” he replied shortly.

“Which is the only reason Tee does anything,” Jack added. “What I’m interested in, is what happened with you and Kat. Spill your guts, man. We’re all dying to know.”

“Excuse me?” Sterling had been reaching for his glass but Jack’s comment startled him and he knocked it. Whiskey sloshed over the rim and splashed his cards.

“Don’t pry,” Shane scolded. “It’s not our business.”

Something squeezed in his stomach. It had been a full-on week, and he felt emotionally wrung out. “Are you all wondering?” Now that Jack had mentioned it, he caught the undercurrent of curiosity. “It’s not a very interesting story.”

“You don’t have to tell us,” Kyle said.

“Shh,” Logan hissed at his brother. “We want to know.”

“I don’t mind sharing.” Telling people he was a goner as far as Katarina Hopa was concerned wouldn’t change the fact she didn’t feel the same way. Or at least, that she wouldn’t admit to it. “The truth is, I care about Kat a lot and I want a relationship with her, but she isn’t ready for that because she hasn’t forgiven herself for her husband’s death. She needs to come to terms with that on her own. There’s nothing I can do about it.”

For a moment, they were all silent, and then Logan cleared his throat. “That was deep.”

“I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about it.” Stewing over it, more like.

“Great,” Shane said. “We’ve cleared out the elephant in the room. Can we play poker now?”

They all hastened to do just that.
