“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Fine.”

More than anything, he wished he could take her into his arms and comfort her, but that wouldn’t be appropriate.

“Dylan,” he said, getting his son’s attention. “Can you please take the grocery list and finish packing the shopping cart? I need a minute with Faith.” When Dylan hesitated, he added, “Choose a chocolate bar each for you and Hunter.”

Dylan didn’t dally for a moment longer, taking the cart and his younger brother and hurrying away before Shane changed his mind.

“What just happened?” he asked, drawing her aside so they could talk without an audience. “Who was that guy?”

She shrugged. “An ex from a long time ago. High school, actually.”

And they still had that much unresolved tension?

“Is there anything you need from me? Would you like me to finish your shopping or call Megan?”

“No.” She appeared to pull herself together and ran a finger beneath each eye, careful not to smudge her makeup. “I’m fine, but thanks for your help.”

“Are you sure? I can—"

She cut him off. “Shane. I appreciate your help. Really, I do. But I’m okay now.”
