For now.

“You’re not making things easy,” Dylan continued. “Why won’t you give her a chance?”

Shane leaned forward. “If you took a flight to Los Angeles without clearing it with me first and hid for a whole year while I tried to find you, would you expect me to forgive you straight away?”

“No.” His voice was small.

“Exactly.”

But Dylan wasn’t done yet. Chin on the top of one knee, he studied Shane, his hair flopping in his eyes. “Is Faith your girlfriend for real now?”

Shane decided to shoot straight with him. “Not officially, but I’d like her to be.”

“Hmph.”

Wanting to be on a more even level, Shane sank to the ground opposite Dylan. It was time to show his hand. “Faith makes me happy. She’s funny, and a bit crazy, and she loves you guys.”

At this, Dylan rolled his eyes.

“Dyl, let’s talk about this, man to man. Whether you like it or not, your mother and I are divorced, and I’m going to want to date again at some point. It might not be now, but it’ll happen. If it can’t be your mum, wouldn’t you rather the woman in our lives be someone you like?”

“But why do you have to date? I don’t want things to change. I don’t want you to get too busy with her and not have time for us.”

“Oh, buddy.” Shane sighed. “I will always have time for you. You and Hunter are the most important people in my life.”

Dylan peered across at him. “You promise?”

“I promise,” Shane said solemnly.

“Okay.” Dylan raised his chin. “I guess Faith is all right.”

It was a small concession, but to Shane, it seemed momentous.
