Page 36 of My Fight

“And I thought you might want to know. I saw them having coffee together and introduced myself. They looked pretty cozy.” He continues, and with each word, my grip on my phone tightens. “He was sharp, full suit, fucking good looking guy, said his name was Donovan Wilson.” Just as he tells me his name, the boys all walk into the room.

“I gotta go, Benji,” I grit out and hang up, not wanting to hear anything more anyway. Donovan Wilson. I don’t even know who he is, but I already want to stab him in the eyes for even looking at my woman.

I nod to the boys, and as they come in and take their seats, I slide over to the internet on my phone and type in his name. I scour the first few results before I find someone that might be who Benji is talking about. Clicking on the page, I see a smarmy guy by the name of Donovan Wilson. He’s a family lawyer, probably better suited to Cat than I ever will be. Swiping out of the page with a huff, I drop my phone on the table, rubbing my hands through my hair.

It’s probably better this way. She deserves someone on the right side of the law, someone that I will never be.

“What the fuck is up with you?” Sebastian barks as he looks at me from across the table, Dante likewise as he sits down next to him. Nico slumps into the seat next to me.

“Nothing,” I reply quickly, not wanting to get into it.

“It’s not nothing. You have been acting like a pain in the ass since you came back from Philly,” Sebastian presses, making it clear I am not getting out of this one. His brows crease, waiting for my answer. I can’t hide anything from him, never have and never will.

“Just the fights coming up. Training is busy, that’s all,” I tell him with a sigh, trying to look anywhere but at him.

“You want to try again, brother?” Dante interjects, and now both of them are staring at me from across the table.

“It’s the doctor, isn’t it?” Nico asks, and I have never wanted to punch the shit out of him more in my life. Snapping my head to him, I drill him with my eyes.

“What?” he says in mock surprise, even though he knows he just totally outed me.

“What doctor, Carter?” Sebastian presses, eyeing me up and down. “Are you okay? Something wrong with you?”

“I’m fine,” I say with a short nod.

“Let me guess, you fucked her, then left? Isn’t that how it goes with you? It’s your M.O. You don’t get attached to women, ever,” Nico adds, digging is grave with every damn word at this point. I clench and unclench my fists, because by the grin on his face, he knows exactly what he is doing.

“What doctor?” Dante is now narrowing his eyes at me, and I already know this meeting is going to shit.

Nico goes to speak again, and Sebastian gives him a look, which thankfully shuts him up real quick.

“Talk,” Sebastian commands, leaving no room for any excuses.

“Doctor Catherine Wakeford…” I admit as my eyes flick to Dante in time to see his eyebrows raise.

“That’s Annie’s doctor,” he says in confusion. “You fucked Annie’s doctor?” All I can do is nod.

“If you have fucked anything up with her working with Annie, I swear to fucking God, Carter, I will—” I cut him off before he can get too angry. Nothing will ever tame him when it comes to Annie’s health and wellbeing after everything they have been through. But I can sure try.

“No, Cat wouldn’t do that, Dante. She wouldn’t punish someone like that, all because of me.”

“You fucked Doctor Wakeford?” Sebastian confirms as he leans back in his chair, and I nod again in reply. “So I take it she’s the one, then?” My eyes snap to his, and I scowl.

“Well, as Nico said, you’ve fucked and ran from women most of your life, but you never have acted like this. So she has gotten under your skin?” he asks again, steepling his hands on the table as he waits for my response.

I take a big breath, feeling like my lungs are empty, before I talk.

“Maybe,” I grit out.

But as much as I hate talking about this shit, I’m relieved for them to know. It is obviously affecting my work more than I thought.

I see Dante raise an eyebrow as he listens intently.

“Well, is she?” Sebastian presses, watching me.

“Is she what?” I try to dodge the questions, because there is no lying in our family. We speak the truth to each other 100% of the time.

“You know what I mean. Is she different, Carter?”
