I lifted my gaze to meet his and noticed his cheeks were pinker than before. “Really? I would love that. Thank you, Luke.”

He regarded me with a mixture of annoyance and amazement, and I smirked. I bet he never saw that coming.

“You’ll look after our girl, wont you, Luke?” Dad chimed in.

Nate chuckled and Amanda smacked him.

“Yes, Sir,” he replied with conviction, and briefly glanced my way before turning his attention back to his dinner.

Mum and Dad looked satisfied by the decision and we continued chatting about the awards night until dinner was over.

I didn’t mention my new business venture, as I wasn’t ready to answer all the questions bound to fly my way. I wanted to hold off until after the awards night, and once I found a place to live.

After dinner, I walked Luke out onto the front porch and paused at the top of the stairs.

“Sorry about that.” I was feeling a little regretful.

Luke chuckled. “You walked me right into that one, didn’t you?”

“I did, didn’t I?” I cringed, hoping he wasn’t too annoyed at me. “Well, you do kinda owe me.”

Luke crossed his arms and leant back on the handrail. “How’s that?” he said. His eyes picked up the light from the moon and sparkled.

I matched his stance and shrugged. “You made a deal with the devil.”

“Your mum is hardly the devil,” he laughed.

I pursed my lips stubbornly. “Well…you don’t know her like I do.”

Luke shook his head with a smirk and I giggled.

“So…” Luke broke our gaze. “Which song are you going to sing?”

I winced. “Actually, I need to talk to you about that.”

His eyebrows raised suspiciously. “What’s up, Blue?”

I lowered my eyes. “They want me…well us…to do the duet.”

Luke’s eyes went round. “What? How do they even know about–”

“I fucked up, Luke,” I interjected. “I forgot it was on my USB and they heard it…and lost their shit over it.” I guiltily lifted my gaze to meet Luke’s.

The corners of his mouth quirked up. “Really?”

“Yeah, they absolutely loved it.”

“Ah, shit, Blue,” he exhaled, placing his hands on his hips. He hung his head as he thought it through.

“But we don’t have to do that one, if you don’t want. There are a couple of others I think may work.”

Luke raised his eyebrows. “We?”

My shoulders sagged. “I don’t want to play these songs with anyone else.”

His eyes softened at my admission, and I could see his resistance wavering. “So, you want me to play in front of how many people?”

“Only about five thousand,” I estimated, casually. “And whoever is watching on TV.”
