A. MITCHELL: Let’s go out for lunch today.

J. SPENCER: Is that your way of telling me to avoid the lunchroom?

A. MITCHELL: Not unless you like everyone staring at you.

I grimaced.

J. SPENCER: What are they saying about me?

A. MITCHELL: It’s all Chinese whispers, don’t worry.

Bile crept up my throat.

J. SPENCER: I’ve lost my appetite.

Instead of eating, I stared blankly at my computer screen. Knowing Grayson was hurt and upset, and Melanie was a complete mess, made me worry about both of them. On top of that, my body was consumed with anxiety about my job, my career, and the future of Maude…and it all lay in the hands of two extremely volatile people.

“What the fuck happened here today?” Adam asked, pausing in my doorway with his suitcase and a mountain of paperwork tucked under his arm. His eyes remained glued on Grayson’s office, clearly assessing the damage.

“Melanie happened,” I grumbled. “She found something of mine in his office and was evidently pissed.”

A line formed between his eyes as he turned to me. “What?”

I dangled the G-string from my hand with a tight smile.

Adam ran his hand down his face. “Fuck, Josie. A little cliché, don’t you think?”

“It was from months ago. Before we ended things.”

He ignored me. “Where’s Grayson now?”

“He left.”

“Shit,” he muttered, glancing down at the paperwork. “I need to find him, preferably before this incident gets back to our parents.”

“Fuck your parents.” I quickly covered my mouth, but the words had already slipped out.

Adam’s eyes grew wide. “Did you just say, ‘fuck your parents’?”

I winced. If I hadn’t already lost my job, I was about to.

Instead of firing me, he burst out laughing.

“Why are you laughing?” I asked, with wide eyes.

His laughter settled into a chuckle. “Because you’re a breath of fresh air.”

My eyebrows drew together, unsure of his meaning.

“Look, I need to go find Grayson and sort this shit out. Can you tell Linda to cancel my afternoon meeting?”

“Um…sure…”

“Oh, and don’t forget to review that gig tonight. Your name’s at the door.”

He left my office and continued to cackle all the way down the hall.
