We spent the next couple of hours walking around the park talking about photography until my stomach let out an embarrassing cry.

Grayson smirked. “I know you said no to lunch, but I may or may not have a backpack full of food if you would like to join me for a picnic?”

I crossed my arms, trying my hardest to contain a smile. “Were you planning on having a picnic for one, or are you really that smug?”

His grin grew bigger as I stared longingly at his bag full of edible promise. “Perhaps a dash of smug, and a ton of wishful thinking?”

I barely heard him over my growling belly. “What exactly have you got in there?”

“Just a few things I had whipped up in The Plaza kitchen.”

My mouth dropped open and I quickly closed it before I drooled.

“Come on,” he said, pulling me towards a patch of grass, away from the masses.

“But I haven’t even said yes yet.”

He chuckled. “Well your eyes clearly decide before your head, because those pretty browns just hollered a big hell yes.”

With a laugh, I grabbed the backpack from his shoulder and sank to the ground. Grayson followed my lead and stretched out his legs, watching in amusement as I rummaged through the bag, pulling out all the goodies.

“If you don’t mind me asking, why did you end things with Melanie so close to the wedding day? I only met her briefly, but it must’ve been quite a shock for her.” I took a large bite of a club sandwich, and watched his reaction closely as I chewed.

Grayson’s jaw tightened and he looked up at the clear sky. “Yeah. My timing was definitely shitty. But it was the right thing to do. I refuse to end up like my parents.”

“Did she feel the same way?”

He sighed. “She will…eventually. It was almost a business arrangement between our parents and we just got caught up in it all. She’ll realise that one day.”

I nodded, but remained silent.

“She was actually more upset I cancelled the wedding, than when I broke it off with her completely. It made me realise just how fucked up our whole relationship was. We weren’t in it for the right reasons. Well, not the reason I want anyway.”

“What reason is that?”

Grayson blushed and his smile grew as he nudged my side with his elbow. “You know.”

His gentle tap made my heart flutter. “Oh, so you are a romantic?”

Sparks were definitely flying again, and I feared what would happen if one hit me.

“I guess I’ve had fresh perspective on things lately.” He looked up and grinned, sneaking in a mischievous wink.

Another few hours passed and I lay quietly on the grass, beside a man I barely knew, feeling completely at ease. In the occasional lulls in conversation, I sat and watched the world go by and Grayson appeared content to do the same.

Long after we’d finished devouring all the delicious treats courtesy of Grayson’s hotel, I showed him some of my favourite photos on my camera and told him the stories behind them all. He appeared fascinated; I never had anyone pay so much attention like he did.

Grayson shook his head. “I still can’t believe you’ve never had an exhibition. You obviously have enough work for your own show…What are you waiting for?”

I shrugged and leant back onto my elbows. “I just don’t feel like I’ve seen enough yet. All my camera has witnessed is six years in New York and twenty-four hours in Vegas.”
