Brad would never know how much those words hurt. Reminded me that Hunter had done so once, and he’d do it again soon. Miles had his life away from us, me, and I needed to remember that.

I was brought back from that thought by his arm around my waist. The possessive way he pulled me back against his chest.

Naked chest.

Skin to skin, I shivered. “What’re you doing?”

His low chuckle met my ear before he placed a soft kiss on my neck. “You’re in so much trouble.”

Chapter 8:

Repercussions

PULLING HIS STRONG hand from around my waist, I stepped out of his hold and whirled around to face him. “You need to leave me alone. He got the hint, and now you can go back to your whor—”

“I’d be very careful with the next few words that come out of that sweet mouth. I don’t like that kind of language from you.” His eyes dared me to defy him, while those words ignited the need to fight back. To not just stand there.

Once again, he was defending her, and I was done.

Why put on the show of a jilted lover? Of a man defending his property?

But then that’s what this was: an act. There was no other reasonable explanation for his sudden interest. Hunter had never seen me as anything other than another little sister.

“Whore.” I took two steps forward and jammed my finger into his chest—tried like hell to ignore the solid muscle twitching beneath my fingertips. How good it felt to have any part of me touching him.

“You’re only making it worse on yourself. Final warning, sweetheart.” He took my smaller hand in his and held it against his chest, so I could feel the rapid beating of his heart, his brusque tone contradicted by his soft touch.

A solid tug from him, and we were chest to chest, both breathing hard.

Electricity sizzled between us.

“Everything okay, kids?” his mom asked, interrupting us.

“Fine.” Immediately, I put some space between Hunter and I—just the few steps he allowed me to move. Even beside him, he held my fingers intertwined with his. It wasn’t enough for me to clear my head, escape his allure.

Kelly’s eyes bounced between the two of us; a worried expression marred her soft features. “Did something happen? Was Brad bothering you again? I’ll call his mother if—”

“Nothing like that, Kelly.” At my smile, she nodded but didn’t look convinced. “All is good.”

“If you are sure?”

“Honey, with Hunter here we have nothing to worry about. He’s protective,” Jeff added, squeezing her arm while looking at his son with pride. The hell?

Hunter smirked at me. “Mom, we were just discussing her move to Pensacola.”

“Ahh, yes! Can’t believe it’s happening so soon.”

“Was offering my home to Emily, and of course Bailey is more than welcome to stay with me.” I gaped at him, eyes wide at the audacity. Those piercing greys on my shocked greens never strayed or wavered.

With him?

Dear God, he couldn’t be serious.

Had Hunter always been this fresh—this pushy? I ignored the small ripple of pleasure that scenario placed in my head.

Us. Together. Sharing a bed.
