It’s been seven days since I left South Carolina, leaving more than just my heart behind. The hours merge into each other, time stopping its flow as chaos ignites all around me.

So much destruction.

So much loss of life.

And yet through all the craziness—the endless hours accompanied by haunting images—I can’t put her out of my mind. Mila remains my focus. My beacon of light inside these moments of darkness.

So far, we’ve squeezed in two phone conversations and the one FaceTime call when I landed in San Salvador. Between the rush of getting set up and traveling to San Miguel, communication has been limited.

“Fuck, you’re gorgeous,” I growl low, my eyes taking in her sweet face after a few days of absence. This—seeing her—means everything to me. I’ve been here a few days now, and I miss her like crazy. Miss her soft lips and the smile she gave me after waking each morning in my arms.

“You’re not so bad yourself, handsome.” She lays the laptop at the end of the bed and then crawls into position in front of the screen. The way she moves—lithe and sensual—causes my cock to throb inside my scrubs. “I’m going to need a picture of you just like this, by the way.”

“Like what?”

“With a bare chest and in a pair of scrubs. It’s going to be my new screensaver.”

I give my hardness a quick squeeze, an action she doesn’t miss, and licks her lips. “Is that so? What do I get in return?”

“Me in your shirt and nothing else? No panties.”

“Motherfuck, sweetness. Are you trying to kill me?”

She laughs, a throaty little giggle that rushes through my body and settles on the engorged head of my dick. “Maybe?”

“I’ll make you pay for that when I get back.” The thought alone has me biting down on my bottom lip. It’s going to be a glorious sight.

“Holding you to that promise.” Mila winks at me, and then her face turns serious. “How’s it going over there? How bad, babe?”

“Crazy.” It’s the truth. Nothing else can describe the world I’m inhabiting at the moment. “The need is greater than we ever anticipated. So much of the city is under soot, and there’s been a few small earthquakes that caused structural destruction; people are still being pulled from underneath the rubble. Most of my patients here are being treated for ash inhalation—breathing problems.”

“You’re amazing,” she breathes out, the expression on her face a mixture of awe and pride.

“And I love you more than I thought was humanly possible.”

Swiping my finger across the screen of my phone, I pull up the last picture of her I captured. Mila doesn’t know this, but I took one while she was sleeping. Peaceful and warm, she was curled up against my side with her leg thrown over my hip.

My arm was around her shoulder, holding her close while her tiny hand laid over my heart. Capturing it on my phone had not been easy, but I managed a decent shot on selfie mode. From the angle, her face is serene and lips slightly parted. Sweet and soft, just how I love her.

And fuck, I do. Love her with a madness that makes every lick of sense to me now.

She’s my person.

The other half of my soul.

Suddenly and without warning, I fell for her. Moreover, while it’s her beauty that drew me in, it’s her warm heart that owns me. Mimi is everything I never knew I wanted and now can’t live without.

The only thing I’ve been able to keep as part of my promise is the daily email I send each day. Just a few short lines that share a dirty fantasy that I plan to make a reality as soon as I’m back on U.S. soil. A new one each day, and I also assure her that I’m okay.

“Hey, Nick.” Evan pokes his head into my temporary office. We’re set up at a local hospital half an hour away from the eruption site. It’s one of the largest in San Miguel and close enough that emergency personnel can get survivors to us quickly.

“What’s up?” I ask, cracking my neck to work out a bit of the mounting tension. I’m on hour number ten of my shift and only have a short nap under my belt more than five hours ago. I’m tired, with several patients already seen for minor injuries and burns on their body.

This is an all hands on deck and your specialty doesn’t count. We are seeing everything from broken bones to deep wounds from being crushed in the earthquake that followed.

“Rescue team two just phoned and we have five new admits coming in. A family that was found trapped inside their home, one of them being an eight month old.”
