“Eat. We’ll talk after.”

“Promise?”

“Yes.”

“Okay.” Grabbing another piece, I bring the cheesy, salty goodness to my lips and take a big bite. Ivan, on the other hand, resumes eating his cold-cut sub while giving me indulgent looks here and there. Almost as if he enjoys spoiling me, but there’s still something off.

Not negative, more like a secret I’m yet to be made aware of.

Once I’m down to the crust, I toss it on my plate and pat my stomach. “No mas.”

“Overate?”

“Thanks to you!” With mock indignation, I slap his chest. “Go for it, Mermaid.”

“Your imitation of me is ridiculous at best.” His chest rumbles with a laugh while the fingers of his right hand skim up my bare thigh. There’s also the flex of his cock beneath me, pushing against my bottom. One, twice...three times, and I can’t help but blush. “Is that how I sound to you?”

The question is simple enough, yet I’m squirming. He’s doing this on purpose. “No.”

“This I got to hear.”

“Not really.” I try to move from his lap, but Ivan holds me in place while thrusting up. “I’m just going to put the leftovers away. Give me two minutes.”

“I’ll let you get up if you answer me.”

Bastard. “To me, it’s sexy,” I say, voice low while trying to avoid his eyes, but the man is having none of it and with the tip of two fingers under my chin, he forces our stares to connect.

“Don’t be embarrassed. To me, you're my kryptonite.”

Why is this man so confusing? Why can’t he just be straightforward?

I can’t judge him based on actions when one minute he’s ignoring me, and the next, worshipping me. When he caters to my pleasure and then lets small truths slip out that knock the proverbial floor from under me.

Buck up and ask him. It’s the only way.

“Ivan, I—”

“I can’t stay away from you, sweetheart,” he says, tone gravelly. Just like when he’s about to come, holding me a little tighter while breathing out a low fuck against my ear. “I’m tired and ready for more than what we’ve been these last few years.”

“Why do I feel like there’s a ‘but’ coming?”

“But there’s something I need to take care of first.”

“Does this have to do with where you’re going after you leave me?” Ivan nods in response. “Does this have to do with the family? With all those trips to Cuba?”

“It does.”

“Hmmm.” For a few beats, we stay in silence, neither saying what we want. He’s holding back, while my mind is running a thousand miles a minute. Yet, I can’t help but come back to one thought. She’s nothing more than an obligation.

She’s nothing more than an obligation.

An obligation.

“Ask me.”

His warm voice pulls me back to the present. “I’m sorry.”

“I said, ask me. Anything, Sirenita...I promise to answer as much as I can.”
