“How? It has to be bad, everyone around here is acting like you’re gonna end up dead for Christ’s sake. Did you hurt someone?” And then a terrible thought enters my head, “God, did you actually kill someone, Nyx?"

“No,” he shakes his head, but in a way that doesn't give me much confidence. “Nothing like that. I did something that I shouldn't have, but I don’t regret it.”

“What’s gonna happen to you now?” I ask, petrified of his answer.

“I’m gonna talk to Prez and try to sort it out.”

“And if you don’t?”

“That ain’t an option. Because the three of us are gonna be together no matter what.” He stands up and pulls on his leather cut. It’s the first time I’ve seen him wearing it, and he looks so damn hot it almost makes me forget what I’m worried about.

I notice the word Prospect written in white along the bottom.

“What does that mean?” I ask, and he looks over his shoulder and follows my eyes to the patch.

“Prospect means you’re workin’ at becoming a member of the club.”

“And that’s what you want, to be a member of this club?”

“It’s all I ever wanted…” he crouches down in front of me “…’till I met you.” He grabs at my hand and strokes his finger over our little boy’s cheek. “Now, there ain't nothing more important than this,” he tells me.

“Why did you want to be one of them?” I’m curious as to why anyone would choose the lifestyle of an outlaw.

“Because they're the only family I’ve ever known. I came to them searching for something and then I found something else.” His eyes focus on me as he smiles.

“Is it still what you want? To be a Dirty Soul?” I ask.

“If it comes down to a choice between them and you, it’s an easy one.” He places a kiss on my forehead before he stands back up.

“Ell, if a guy called Brax comes and tells you to go with him. Don’t question him okay, you get the kid and you leave.” I hate how serious he sounds all of a sudden.

“Nyx…”

“Don’t ask, Ella, just promise me you’ll trust Brax if he comes for you.”

“Okay,” I agree and he kisses our little boy's head.

“You make sure you come back to us, Nyx.” I look up at him, trying to sound threatening.

“Pinkie promise,” Nyx holds out his little finger, and I hook mine tight around it.

The promise is sealed now, I just have to trust that he won’t break it.

I fucking hate leaving them, and when I get out on to the yard. I feel the eyes of every brother on me. Jessie has his hand on Tac’s chest, stopping him from launching at me and I get why he’s so angry. Tac cared about me enough to give me a shot and I’ve let him down.

Prez called a church meeting late last night, so everyone will know who Ella is now, and that I betrayed him in the worst possible way. I walk straight past them all and get on to my bike.

Brax steps out of his cabin and rests his shoulder on one of the porch pillars, crossing his arms over his chest. The subtle nod he gives me assures me that he has everything in place if things go wrong, and I can’t believe I’m having to put all my trust in him right now.

I start up my engine and take the ride down to the clubhouse, parking my bike beside the only other one that’s down here. Then I make my way up the path that leads to the chapel, my heart pumping out of my chest as I knock at the door. I hear Prez call out for me to go inside, and I take a deep breath before I push the door open.

It’s been almost a year since he called me in here and set me my task. Trusting me to watch out for his secret daughter, to get close and find out more about her. The kid I was back then wasn't capable of caring for anyone but himself. I’m a man now, with responsibilities and a heart that beats fiercely for my family.

Prez waits for me at the head of his table, his eyes narrow and focused on me as I step up towards him.

“Look, Prez…” I start when I reach the opposite end of the long table. I figure a safe distance between us is a good idea.

“You stop those pussy lips running when you’re in my church, boy,” he shouts me down, his expression cold and the long, drawn-out silence that follows having me even more on edge.
