“Thankyou…” I grab his hand again, “…for not punishing Nyx”

“Just ‘cause he ain’t dead don’t mean he won’t be punished,” Prez tells me with a wicked smirk.

“I got to get down to the club, you need anything you let me know,” he tells me, and I nod to him as he backs out the balcony door.

I look out on the view, breathing in the fresh mountain air as I take everything in. Vincent Jackson isn’t my real father, my whole life has been a lie, but standing here looking down on the Dirty Souls compound, I can’t seem to feel mad about that. What I do feel is excited, excited for a future. My family's future.

Hands slide onto my hips and lips touch my neck, and I take Nyx's hands and pull them around my waist.

“I wanted to tell you,” he says.

“I get why you didn’t. You were trying to protect me”

“I knew you hated the judge, but I didn’t think he was a threat to you. If I did, I would have got you out of there, fuck the consequences.”

“I don’t want to think about the past, Nyx, I want to look forward now.”

“You know I’m gonna give you everything Ella Carson,” he promises. And hearing my name for the first time feels really weird, a good kinda weird.I turn in his arms to face him, his nose brushing against mine as I stare up through his eyes straight into his reckless soul.

“You already did,” I whisper, before our lips touch and I lose myself to him again.

The ice in my whisky has melted, and I’m starting to wonder if she’s gonna show.

I’d picked this place to meet her for a reason. And I’m sitting in the very same booth I watched her from that night. Thenight her and her preppy friends decided to live wild and visit a biker bar in a different town. I’d known within seconds of setting eyes on her that I’d have to have her. And I did,for at least a whole summer. She was the only girl I needed during that time. I didn’t touch a club slut, and I wasn’t touching Mary-Ann anyway.

Joanne looks around the bar wearily when she steps through the door. She hasn’t reallychanged much over the years. She’s still fuckin’ heart-stopping stunning, and she still carries herself like she knows it. Her heels clip across the stickywood floor as she heads straight for me.

I wonder if she’s gonnaslap me, and I'm almost disappointed when she doesn’t. Though what she does do is far morefuckin’ painful. She looks me straight in the fucking eyes. Making it impossible for meto ignore how they're on the brink of breaking. Her lips wobble, desperate to sob, and I do all I can to ignore the painful wedge she instantly puts back in my chest.

“Thanks for coming,” I gesture for her to sit opposite me.

“I didn’t have a lot of choice, did I?” she bites back, turning up her nose as she slides into the booth.

“You want a drink?” I ask, and she shrugs, acting like she isn’t bothered either way.

“Can we get a vodka and lime ova here,” I call out to Shelly who’s working the bar.

“Sure thing, Prez,” she calls back over, as eager to please as ever.

“I’m not the same person I was back then,” Joanne tellsme, though I can tell she’s impressed that I remembered her drink by the small curl in her lips.

“You're right about that, how ya finding it being a widow?” I ask smugly, before lighting up a cigar.

“You know why I asked you here?” I start.

“Ella called me, she told me about the baby. Jesus, Jimmer, how could you let this happen? We had an agreement,” she snaps at me under her breath looking around to check she isn’t causing a scene. I huff a laugh at her and exhale smoke across the table.

“Did you speak to your husband like that, JoJo?” I ask, watching her cower slightly. Truth is, no one speaks to her husband. Not anymore. And I’mguessing from the way she’s looking at me that she knows exactly what happened to him.

“Yeah, didn’t think so, darlin’. See it turns out all those years ago when I thought I was doing the right thing by my daughter, I really fucked up. I relied on you, her motherto put her first. I trusted you enough to let her go.

Turns out, she’d have been better off with me the whole time.”

“Don’t you dare…” Joanne starts, but I soon cut her off.

“Did you know what your sick fuck husband’s been doing to her? ‘Cause I do. She told me everything, and I’m here to warn you that I’m taking care of shit now.”

“Are they okay? Ella and the baby,” she asks, her angry act dropping quicker than a whore’s panties.
