“You’re the fucking cutest thing,” he tells me, the teeniest hint of a smile back on his lips that makes my heart soar. “You’re mine, Ella Jackson. No matter what happens next, I need you to remember that this is fuckin’ real.”

“How could I forget? I’ll be feeling you for fucking days.” I roll my eyes at him, and he gently nips the lobe of my ear with his teeth as he carries me over to my bed and tucks me inside.

“You’re not leaving, are you?” I ask, worried that this is goodbye. Nyx looks at me like I’ve grown an extra head.

“You asked me to stay, didn’t you?” he asks.

“Yeah,” I nod.

“Then I’m staying,” he speaks as if I was crazy to assume otherwise, snuggling in beside me and wrapping me up in his arms.

“You gonna sleep with your clothes on?” I ask, exhaustion making my voice lazy.

“I don’t sleep all that much, and I might have to make a fast exit.” That makes sense, I guess. At least one of us is thinking straight.

“Nyx, will you make me a new promise?” I yawn, feeling my body shutting down on me.

“If I can give it to you, I will,” he answers me, exactly the same way he did the last time I asked him to promise me something.

“Promise me you’ll never leave me?” I feel his body turn rigid and when he takes the longest time to answer, I wonder if I’ve pushed him too far. I mean, way to scare a guy off, Ella, you’ve only just slept with him.

“Promise,” he says, his lips touching my hair. Warmth spreads inside my tummy as I start to drift off to sleep. I remind myself to ask him about the guy I’d seen on the bike wearing the hooded skull on his back, but my brain switches off too soon… I’ll ask in the morning.

I’m stirred awake by soft kisses at my temple and I peek my eyes open. My curtains are still open and it’s barely light outside.

“I got to go, darlin’.” I hear Nyx’s voice and I stretch out against his body like a needy kitten.

“What time is it?” I yawn.

“It’s almost six. I got to change before school and I wanna get out of here before anyone wakes up.” He slides out of bed and I miss him instantly.

“Nyx.”

“Yep?”

I look over my shoulder and see him pulling on his shoes.

“We have to keep us a secret. I don’t want my father finding out about us, not yet.”

“Okay,” he says with a smile, leaning down and placing another kiss on my lips. I close my eyes feeling the mattress move as he pushes away from me. I’m just starting to drift off again, and suddenly he’s back. His body on top of mine and his legs straddling either side of my hips. He takes my hands, pinning them above my head then kisses me, long, hard, and almost as roughly as you’d expect a guy like Nyx to kiss you.

“That should keep me going till later.” I open my eyes and catch him licking his lips before he jumps off me and darts out onto the balcony.

I would bounce down the stairs weightlessly, if it wasn’t for the dull ache between my legs. And I say a good morning to everyone. Including my father who huffs a disgruntled response back at me. I wear a smile the whole drive to school, because all I can think about is Nyx and how as soon as I graduate, he can take me away from all this bullshit.

Father drops me off at the entrance and I make my way inside.

“Hey.” I hear his voice come from behind me and quickly spin around. “Still grounded, huh?” Nyx lifts his head as he catches up with me.

“Yep,” I sigh.

“How’s your…?” his voice lowers and he looks down between my legs. Just his eyes focusing there does something to me.

“Like hell walking,” I tell him, and he suddenly looks hurt.

“Jeez, I’m kidding. It’s still a little sore but fine.I guess that’s what you get for playing with the big boys,” I tease.

“There will be no fuckin’ boys, plural, just me. Mine, remember?” his eyebrow lifts in a warning.
