“An amateur,” Father thinks out loud.

“Or a warning.” I curl my lip. I want fucking blood for this.

“Please.” Mother reminds us both of how insensitive we’re being.

“I am the brother, take me to him.” I look at the doctor, then nod some assurance at my father before I follow the doctor out of the room. It goes without saying that I’m gonna take care of the matter personally. And the fact Rhett has asked to see me first is enough to ensure that he knows exactly who did this to him.

The doctor opens the door for me. “Just a few minutes, he needs to rest,” he instructs, and I swear if the man hadn’t just saved my brother's life, he’d be chewing on a fucking bullet for daring to tell me how much time I get with my own flesh and blood.

“Who the fuck did this?” I ask my brother as soon as the door closes. He looks like shit, but he’s alive and right now, that’s all that matters.

“I’d guess it was one of Damien Sylvester's guys, since he got a theory from somewhere that I knocked up his sister.” Rhett looks weak as hell, he’s struggling to even talk.

“And did you?” I check, closing my eyes and trying to gain some patience.

“You think I’d touch that skanky whore?” Even through his pain, he manages to look offended by my accusation.

“I don’t know. If I’m judging by the one you got hanging out in the family room, the same one that had you distracted from the cunt putting a knife in your back, I’d have to consider it.”

“Raoul, I didn’t fuck the girl. She came onto me a while back at a party we were at, but I didn’t touch her. She’s seventeen, even I’m not that fucking stupid.”

“Are you good?” I check, knowing that Father won’t be able to hold Mother off for much longer, and I’m not about to leave this hospital to deal with Damien until I know Rhett's okay.

“I’ll live to see tomorrow, which I guess is more than can be said for Damien.” He sniggers back at me.

“He works for us, what he did was brave,” I think out loud, trying to make sense of all this.

“Yeah well, I take this as a clear-cut sign that he’s decided he doesn’t work for us anymore.” Rhett makes a good point, one that sets me on edge.

“You just rest up and stay out of trouble,” I tell him, before making my way out to where Sal is waiting for me in the corridor.

“How is he?” he asks as I start leading us back to the car.

“Good, considering,” I answer, thinking things over as we make our way through the corridors. When we get to the car, Sal opens the door for me and I turn to face him. “When we get back, I need you to take a couple of the others to go pick up Damien Sylvester. Take him out to the ranch and keep him contained. I'll deal with him tomorrow.”

“Consider it done.” Sal waits until I’m inside before he closes the door on me. Desperate as I am to watch Damien squirm for what he’s done, the night is almost over, and I intend to spend every second of what’s left of it making good on my promise to the girl waiting for me at home.
