“Got it,” Sal nods back at me.

“I also want Damien’s cell phone, he must have contacts that link to Prizrak. Let’s see if this ghost is brave enough to come out of hiding and meet with me face to face.”

“Consider it done.” Sal gets straight to work, and I head further away from the door to avoid Damien’s screams before I pull out my cell.

“Hello.” Evelyn answers on the fourth ring, it sounds so fucking sweet it makes my heart feel like it’s being clawed at by starving animals.

“It’s me, what are you doing?”

“I’m shopping with Claude, and we’re trying on underwear,” she giggles. The thought of any other guy trying underwear on with her would normally make me murderous, but I can rest assured that Evelyn is not Claude's type.

“How’s your day going?” she asks.

“I’ve done everything I need to do. I will be home soon.” I take a look in the mirror in the hall. I’ll have to shower and change before I go back to her, Damien’s blood is all over the cuffs of my jacket. Thankfully, I keep a wardrobe of clothes here for occasions like these.

“Okay, take care and I’ll see you when you get home.” She hangs up the phone and I press my forehead into the mirror, taking a deep breath. Her saying those words, knowing that she’ll be waiting for me at home, puts a comfort inside me that I shouldn’t allow myself to enjoy. I can’t imagine ever feeling that contentment with anyone but her.

“Am I taking you home, sir?” my driver interrupts me, and when I spin around to face him I must look murderous. “Sal took the range rover, I assumed you were ready to leave,” he cowers backward.

“Not yet, I’ll shower first.” I pull myself together, running my hand through my hair before I head up the stairs.

The ranch has been in our family for years, it’s where we come when we need to take our time with a situation. To anyone on the outside, it looks like the perfect family home, the place is run exactly how it should be, there is livestock here, and staff who take care of them. This place is a second home to me and my brother. We come here to party, we come here to fuck and we come here to kill.

I shower and change as quickly as I can, eager to get back to Evelyn, our time together is limited and I intend to make every second of it count. Before I leave, I head back down to the basement to check on Damien. He’s still alive but he won’t be for long, his head has fallen forward and the blood on the plastic is spreading wider. I keep my distance from him, I won’t allow him to ruin another decent suit.

I take a picture of him with my phone and send it to my brother, then to my father. But what I fail to tell them both is that I’m bringing his sister here. Father will say I’m weak for caring, and Rhett will be offended that I doubt him.

The girl will remain my secret for a while.

I light up another cigarette on my way to the outhouse where I know I’ll find Felix, the man we pay to keep this place going.

“I guess I’m cleaning up your mess?” he chuckles to himself as he slides out from under the tractor he’s working on.

“Yes, and you're going to need to work fast, his sister will be arriving in a few hours and I don’t want her to have to see him.”

“A sister?” Felix cocks a brow at me as he stands up and wipes his hands with an oily rag.

“Yes, it’s a delicate situation that I’m going to need you to handle for me. The girl is pregnant, and there is a chance the child could be Rhett’s.”

“Oh.” Both eyebrows lift this time, and he throws the rag at his workstation.

“I need you to make sure Cora deals with all her needs, I will arrange for a physician to visit her, and I will deal with the situation accordingly when I have more information. Rhett and my father must not know she’s here,” I stress.

“And what if they visit?” Felix asks.

“They won’t, Rhett’s in hospital, and when he gets released Mother will have him under her watchful eye at home, and can you remember the last time you saw my father out here?” I remind him.

“Good point. I’ll see that the girl is taken care of,” he agrees, not that he has much choice on the matter, my father may pay his wages, but I pay the people on the inside who take care of his son. Felix’s boy got a fifteen-year sentence for accidentally killing a cop a few years back, he was just a kid trying to make his mark on the world, who got involved with the wrong people. And prison can be a dangerous place when no one’s got your back.

“I’ll be back in a few days to talk with her. In the meantime, if you have any trouble, call me.”

“It’s busy around here, you might want to keep one of your meatheads around to ensure the girl doesn’t escape. I’m assuming since her brother’s become my latest problem that she won’t be coming willingly.” He crosses his arms over his chest.

“You make a good point. I will have Sal stay with her, just keep in mind that he doesn’t have the best social skills.” I snigger.

“And what will you do if the child isn’t Rhett’s?” Felix asks me before I have the chance to leave. And because I like the man, I decide to be honest with him.

“I have no idea.”
