RAOUL

“Where is she?” I ask Felix when I arrive at the ranch.

“Sal thought she’d be more comfortable in the master bedroom.” He looks at me, unimpressed, and I shake my head as I move past him, up the stairs, and toward the master bedroom.

When I fling open the door, I see the girl sitting in a chair beside the balcony doors, she’s giving some serious dagger eyes at Sal, who’s sitting on the edge of the bed looking pissed, with his arms hanging over his knees.

“Welcome.” I smile at the girl, despite her being the reason that my brother is currently in hospital. I’ve learned over the years that kindness can sometimes prompt the truth as easily as pain.

“What did you do with my brother?” She gets up from the chair, coming at me fiercely, and Sal moves quickly to put himself in front of me.

“Believe me, you do not want to do that.” He looks down at her and growls her a warning.

“Oh trust me, I really do.” The fiery little thing pushes against him. “You tell me where my brother is right now.” She stretches up on her toes, trying to look over Sal's hefty shoulder at me.

“You shouldn’t be getting worked up in your condition,” I remind her, tapping Sal on his shoulder to ease him off, this little girl is no threat to me.

“Please take a seat, I would like to talk to you,” I gesture my hand toward the chair she was sitting in.

“I’m not saying a word until you tell me where my brother is,” she says defiantly.

“Very well,” I agree, in the calmest tone I can manage. “Your brother is dead.” I stare at her and show no emotion as I watch the breath catch in her throat. Sal manages to catch her just before she falls when her knees give out on her.

“Shit, Raoul.” He throws me a dirty look over his shoulder before carrying her over to the bed and laying her as carefully as a man his size is capable of, onto the mattress.

“You're an animal,” she barks at me, tears streaming out of her eyes as she stares back at me with pure hatred.

“If you want someone to blame for your brother's death you should blame yourself. You told a lie about my brother, and that provoked a reaction out of yours. His death was the consequence of that lie.” I put it to her straight, and watch the girl break into a painful sob.

“I want you to look me in the eye and tell me that the child you carry is Rhett’s.” I hold her glare, as her hand cradles protectively over her slightly rounded stomach.

“The baby is his,” she replies confidently, the look on her face giving me no reason to doubt her, which makes this whole situation even more complicated.

“I will have a physician sent to see you. You have heard some upsetting news today so you must rest. You will stay here until your child is born, and then we can determine if you're telling the truth with a paternity test.”

“And what if I don’t want to stay here,” she snuffles, as she wipes her eyes with the back of her hand.

“You have no choice. How you are treated while you are here will depend on your cooperation. I’d very much like it if Sal could treat you like a guest, if your child is a Burlusconi it belongs to us, and we are very protective of own.”

“You can’t take my baby from me!” She flicks her eyes between me and Sal, suddenly looking petrified.

“I’d take no pleasure in taking a child from its mother. Cooperate with us and you shall keep your child.”

The girl settles back down slowly, I don’t know if she believes what I say, I don’t care. All that matters is that this fuck up doesn’t blowback on my family. Damien was right, the girl is merely a child herself, and if Rhett is responsible for knocking her up, he’s got a lot of explaining to do.

“If you need anything, you speak to Sal, I have a lot going on right now and I don’t want you to be a problem,” I tell her firmly, then gesture my head for Sal to follow me out the room. Once we’re alone in the hall, I lower my voice to a whisper.

“Do you believe the girl?” I ask his opinion, he's spent the most time with her.

“I’m not staying here with her.” He ignores my question, looking back at me furiously.

“You’re the only person I can trust with this,” I explain, lighting myself a cigarette.

“Raoul, I’m not the guy for this job. I can’t deal with this kinda shit. She’s a girl for fuck’s sake. A hormonal one. Why the hell am I suffering for a mistake Rhett made?” I can see how pissed he is, and I understand. It’s the reason I’m tolerating the tone he’s taking with me.

“It’s important that the girl and her situation remain a secret for now. Think of this as some time off, this place isn’t so bad, is it?” I smirk at him, before taking another drag.
