“I’ll be there within an hour,” I promise, hanging up the phone and heading back up the stairs for a shower.

“Will you be having breakfast Mr. Burlusconi?” Wendy scurries out of the kitchen and catches me.

“I’m not hungry,” I dismiss her.

“You should eat something, sir, you need your strength.”

It’s unlike Wendy to speak her mind, I don’t pay her for that.

“I’m not hungry,” I repeat, continuing to head up the stairs so I can make myself more presentable.

I arrive at the ranch and nod a greeting to Felix, who is hanging around the foyer and trying to make himself look busy.

“Morning, Mr. Burlusconi.” He exchanges a snide look with Sal that tells me I’m missing something.

“Do you want to tell me what’s going on?” I look at my cousin.

“Follow me.” He leads me into the office, scowling at Felix as he holds open the door for me and then follows me inside.

“Before I take you upstairs, I want you to promise me that you won’t hurt the girl.” Sal shocks me, not just by what he says but by the way he’s staring back at me like I suddenly became his enemy.

“What the fuck is going on here?” I slam my fist down on the desk. I haven’t got the tolerance for this shit. How hard can it be to keep one fucking girl out of trouble?

“Promise me.” He frowns.

“I don’t make a habit of hurting pregnant women,” I remind him, inhaling through my nostrils and trying to ease my temper.

“I can see you're in a shitty mood and maybe this isn’t the right time, but we need to act fast.” Whatever this is, has him really worried.

“You need to tell me what this is all about, Sal,” I try again. This time in a calmer tone.

“Give me your word first. I’m your blood, but if you try to hurt her, I swear I won’t take that into consideration.”

Sounds to me like Sal’s up to his ball sack. He’s somehow fallen victim to the oldest trick in the book. Clever captives form a bond with their kidnappers, then they use that bond to weaken them. I thought Sal was better than that.

“You have my word,” I promise him sincerely.

“Follow me.” He opens the door and guides me up the stairs toward the room where the girl has been staying.

She’s pacing the floor in front of the window, chewing on her nails, and despite the petrified look on her face, she seems a lot healthier than the last time I saw her.

The maxi dress she’s wearing must be new and it emphasizes her pregnant figure, reminding me that I need to approach the matter as delicately as possible.

“I’ve spoken to him, he’s good.” Sal’s tone is a little softer than usual as he moves toward her and touches her shoulder, comforting her in a way I never knew he was capable of. The man’s the size of a bull and usually has the temperament of one too.

She looks up at him helplessly, on the verge of tears.

“You need to tell me what the fuck’s going on!” I yell, becoming impatient.

“Shouting at her isn’t going to help, Raoul.” Sal gives me a look that could easily be mistaken for a fucking warning.

“I lied to you,” the girl finally speaks up, her hand shaking as she continues to bite her nails. “This baby doesn’t belong to your brother.” Her hand slides protectively around her middle and Sal closes his eyes, bracing himself for my reaction.

“You swore to me.” I take a step forward, and Sal protectively moves in front of her.

“You gave me your word,” he reminds me.

“This little bitch got my brother stabbed,” I seethe.
