“Sure, see ya then,” I agree, and Jessie shakes his head at me before he heads back in the direction of the club. I’m done here, I should really follow him, but instead, I find myself heading over to where Shaniya is sitting with her friend.

“Hey.” I stand over them, blocking the sunlight. Now I’m over here, I don’t really know what I came to say. Her friend looks up at me like she wants to rip my face off. She knows about us because she covers for Shaniya, but that doesn’t mean she trusts me.

“Roof’s watertight,” I inform them both.

“I’ll head on up and tell Tayen the good news.” Shan stands on her feet, she’s acting strange, flustered, and I forget that the village is buzzing with people when I reach out and grab her waist.

“What’s wrong?” I ask sternly.

“There’s nothing wrong, Troj.” Her eyes shift around us nervously.

“Bullshit, you’ve avoided me all morning, and you're acting weird.”

“I’m fine,” she promises, not sounding convincing at all.

I sense Tawk’s eyes burning into the back of my head, and Shaniya doesn't know where to look.

“Tell me what’s going on or I’ll go over there and ask him myself,” I warn.

“Tawk kissed her last night,” her friend blurts out, causing rage to spread through my body like a gasoline-fueled fire as I flick my eyes between Dyanni and Shaniya.

“That true?” I ask, trying to keep some calm in my tone.

“Yes, it’s true. And Shaniya hit him,” her friend speaks up for her again.

“So, you did that to his face?” I look at Shan, doing everything I can to stop the smirk from reaching my lips.

“It’s not funny,” Shaniya scolds me, wearing the sexiest guilty look on her face I ever fucking saw. “I hurt his feelings, Troj.”

“Looks like you hurt more than his feelings,” I huff a laugh. Right now, the fact I’m so proud of my girl for putting the asshole in his place is the only thing that’s keeping me from putting him back on bed rest.

“He called me a biker whore,” she tells me quietly, looking down at her feet and flushing red. I instantly feel the cocky smile slip from my face, and I turn around and start marching over to him.

“Please Troj,” she pleads, trying to pull me back, but she only ends up being dragged along with me, and the arrogant asshole stands like he’s waiting.

Shaniya somehow manages to get in front of me, blocking my path, and her hands reach up desperately, grabbing my face, and forcing me to focus on her. I feel them shaking against my jaw, and see something fearful in her pretty blue eyes.

“Troj, please don’t. Tawk is hurting. I don’t want our people to hate each other again, not now.” Her hands slide down my neck, passing over my chest before they wrap tight around my waist, and she tucks her body tightly into mine. Either she’s forgotten or she doesn’t care that a village of people are watching us.

“It’s okay,” I whisper, kissing the top of her head as I stroke my hand through her long silky hair. I stare across at Tawk, and all my anger for the man seems to vanish when I see the pain on his face. The part of me that doesn't want to castrate him actually feels fucking sorry for him.

Shaniya eventually pulls away from me and wipes her fingertips over her wet cheeks. It makes me hate myself for being the cause of her tears.

“His words only hurt me because I feared what he said might be true,” she tells me, looking over my shoulder toward her friend before she bursts into tears and races off toward the woods.

I go to chase after her but her friend steps in my way.

“You and I need to talk.” She crosses her arms over her chest and stands defiantly in front of me.

“I need to—”

“You hear me out before you go after her,” Dyanni interrupts, and I take a deep breath, hoping she’ll make it quick.

“I know what you people are like, I’ve heard what you do, and I don’t know how or why my friend has fallen for you, but she’s prepared to give up all she’s ever known for you.”

“I would never ask—”

“I just want you to know…”
