“I don’t understand why you’re here, Mr. Barnes. Do you want to find out what happened to your daughter? Because you don’t seem to care.”

“I want the Souls to pay,” he swipes.

“They have nothing to pay for, you should be thanking them.”

“I lost my daughter years ago. She never wanted for anything. That spoiled little brat chose her path. I was prepared to give her a second chance for the sake of my campaign, but she didn’t want to be helped.”

“You're a despicable person,” I tell him straight.

“Maybe, but whatever my guy found out about your brother was obviously big enough for him to take to someone else.”

“Or he had nothing at all. And you got conned.”

My door knocks and Lucille lets herself in. “Sorry to interrupt, but Agent Davies is here.” She scowls at Mr. Barnes as he stands and buttons up his jacket.

“It’s a big ocean out there, Miss Monroe, and there are more sharks than fish.” The glare he gives me heats my blood and chills my skin, and as soon as he’s marched out the room, I fall back into my chair, and Lucille races toward me.

“What the hell just happened?” She puts her arms around my shoulders, trying to comfort me. My hands shake as I reach for a pen and scribble down the name, Seb Wheeler.

“Lucille, I need you to get this name to Maddy Summers. You tell her Abby’s Father hired him to investigate the club and my brother.”

“Your brother? I didn’t know you had a brother… Is he cute?”

“Lucille?” I snap.

“Sorry, yep. I’ll pass it on. But Alex, you're making me worry. Something’s wrong.”

“Something’s very wrong, now send Agent Davies in,” I tell her, swallowing down my nerves and pulling myself back together.

“Deputy Monroe.” The agent holds out his hand as he approaches my desk a few minutes later.

“Alex, call me Alex.” I take it, attempting a sturdy shake. I doubt I’ll ever be called deputy or even officer ever again after this conversation. “I need to make my statement.” I breathe a trembling sigh, and when I look down at my other hand, I realize that I’m stroking it over my tummy again. “It wasn’t Cody Harrison that shot Agent Hawker.” I force the words past my lips.

“It was me.”

“You're free to go.” When an officer I haven’t seen before opens my cell door, the first thought that springs to my mind is that this is the club’s work. I wonder how much he’s been paid off to let me out so I can run. But instead of leading me toward some back door exit, he takes me through to the holding reception and steps behind the desk. Then he slides a clipboard across to me, with a clear bag holding my cell phone, keys, and wallet resting on top of it.

“Sign here,” he points to the line on the bottom of the page.

“What is this shit? You ain’t just letting me go. I killed someone.” I’m confused as hell.

“I’ve just been told to release you, sir.” He stares back at me blankly.

“Well, I’m not leaving here until you tell me what's going on.” I’m starting to get a bad feeling in my gut, one that I don’t fucking like.

“Well that’s got to be a first.” He makes a mocking grin to the woman standing beside him, and lucky for this son of a bitch, I’m too focused on getting an answer to rip him over his desk and make sure he never smiles again. “All I know is that we got a full confession out of the person responsible. Your name is clear, so you are free to go. But you will need to be available for questioning and for anything that may lead to a trial.”

“Alex.” I shake my head and grip the edge of the desk.

“You can use the payphone if your cell is flat,” the officer points his head toward the grey payphone in the corner of the waiting room.

I head out the door and turn on my cell, there’s a little battery left, and my chest drops into my stomach when I try Alex, and it goes straight to answerphone. I try Roswell next, but it rings out. The third person I try picks up straight away.

“Screwy,” I yell into the phone when he answers. “They’ve released me. What the fuck’s happened?”

“What? You're out?” He’s too relieved to grasp that this is bad, real fucking bad.

“Yeah, free, just like that. Where’s Alex? Has she spoken to anyone at the club?” I rush him to the point.
