“You came here to take me out?” she checks.

“Can’t have you newcomers thinking the men of this town can’t be gentlemen.” I lean on the door frame and wait for her to give up pretending she doesn’t want to come.

“And where exactly do you intend to take me on this date?” she asks sarcastically.

I scrub a hand over my chin and take in some more of her in that fucking dress.

“You’re gonna have to come with me and find out.”

“Do you know how crazy this is?” She looks at me like I’ve lost my mind, but she likes the thrill of it. I can tell by the sparkle in her eyes and the smile she’s trying to tame off her lips.

“You coming, or are you always gonna wonder what it’s like to date Cody Harrison?” I raise my eyebrows at her impatiently. And she finally gives into that smile.

“I’ll grab my purse,” she huffs as she turns around and struts that tight ass over to the table to grab it.

This is crazy. Me, sitting beside Squealer, letting him drive me to god knows where on a date. I don’t even like the guy. Just looking at him gets me irritable. Granted, it gets me horny too, but that is not the point right now.

Squealer shocks me when he pulls up outside some fancy restaurant in Fountain.

“Stay there,” he orders, getting out of the driver's seat and racing around the hood so he can open the door for me.

“Thank you.” I offer him my hand so he can help me out.

“See, I can be charming.” He winks at me, keeping hold of my hand as he walks me toward the entrance.

“What are you doing?” I look down to where his hand is covering mine, crushing my fingers between his.

“Ain’t this what people do on dates?” He frowns, and for a second, just a second, I feel myself soften to him. There's no denying that Cody Harrison is handsome. In a rugged, bad-boy kinda way that should be totally avoided. I just wish I could stop myself from constantly gravitating toward him. He’s everything my mom and dad told me to avoid when I was growing up.

When he opens the huge glass door into the restaurant, I take a look around our surroundings and smile to myself. This is the kinda place my father would go. There’s even a Maître D at a stand waiting to greet us, and he looks incredibly surprised when he takes in Squealer.

The room has no atmosphere. No one seems to be smiling, and I notice the glances that are getting thrown at him, even if he doesn’t.

“You really wanna eat here?” I whisper, tugging on his arm and pulling him back.

“Sure,” he nods back at me unconvincingly.

“Can I help?” The Maître D asks, looking Squealer up and down judgingly.

“No,” I interrupt before Squealer can speak up, giving his arm a harder yank and dragging him out the door.

“Hey,” he pulls me to a halt before we get to the car, “I had a reservation.”

“You really wanna eat in that place?” I turn and face him.

“I told you I did.”

“That isn’t you in there, Squealer.”

“Ahh, so this is about you being embarrassed.” He rubs his hand around the back of his neck and looks a little wounded.

“Not at all…” I stare back at him so he knows I’m not lying to him. “Squealer, I’ve been holed up in a new town for almost a month. And I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m not all that good at making friends. I wanna cut loose and have some fun. We aren’t gonna find fun in there.” I point my finger back toward the door and wait for his reaction.

For a few seconds I’m met with silence, Squealer's eyes narrowing in on me while he decides if I’m being genuine or not.

“You want a good time, huh?”

“Please.” I laugh, suddenly feeling a little lighter.
