“Screw’s fucked up, but he ain't crazy. Rick deserved to die for treating our mama bad. Screwy was just the one who dealt the blow.”

“And where’s your mama now?” I ask, a little daunted by all the information I’m taking in, and how freely he’s giving it.

“Still living in Dallas, she moved in with our aunt. We visit her from time to time.”

“And how did you both come to be at the club?” I keep him on the subject, even after realizing I’m not leading to anything about Hawker.

“Ain’t it my turn to be asking?” He smirks.

“I’m interested,” I confess, fully prepared to give a little piece of myself away. If he sees it as a weakness, I don't care. I’m curious about the man in front of me. The man I can’t seem to get out of my head who is distracting me from what I came to this town to do.

“Let’s just say, me and my brother have a hunger. One that the club keeps fed. There’s a whole lot of ‘Ricks’ in this world, darlin’.”

“So you see yourselves as some kind of vigilantes?”

“Ain’t ever hurt a man who didn’t deserve it,” he holds his hands up.

“And your brother, is he okay now?”

“Screwy ain’t spoken to anyone but me since the day our sister died. He’s as well as he’ll ever be, but I can guarantee he’d put his life over mine. Same as I would for him.

“How did your sis—”

“It’s definitely my turn now,” he interrupts me, staring hard at me while he tries to find the right question.

“Why did you become a cop?” he asks eventually.

“It wasn’t really ever a decision. My grandfather was a cop, the same as my father and brother. It just felt like the right thing to do, I guess.” I can’t recall anyone ever actually asking me that question before. I’ve worked so hard to get where I am without using my father's credibility, and I suddenly realize I’ve never really asked myself that question.

“And you enjoy it?” Squealer urges me to continue.

“Yeah, I think so. It’s good to help people, right?”

“And be a pain in the ass for others.” Squealer bites down on his lip, my pussy instantly throbbing when I remember that lip being on mine.

“So, why are you so hell-bent on nailing Hawker?” Squealer keeps his tone calm, even though he’s shooting high. I always knew that truth would be my weakness.

Hawker is a bad man; he’s done bad shit. Squealer and his club know that. Shouldn’t that be enough?

But Squealer’s let me in a little tonight. I’m starting to think maybe my weakness might get me some answers, help him understand why this is so important to me. The one thing the club does seem to understand is family.

“This ain’t professional, it’s personal,” I confess, taking another drink to wet my dry mouth before I lay everything I have on the table for him.

“Hawker killed my brother.” The words feel as sharp as razors as I let them go, and I instantly feel the onset of tears sting the back of my eyes.

Squealer suddenly becomes intrigued. I can tell by the shift in his posture.

“My brother had suspicions about Hawker. He was putting together a case file to present to the anti-corruption unit. The last time I spoke to my brother, he told me he was scared. He was convinced Hawker was on to him, so he sent that file to me as a precaution,” I explain, watching Squealer being drawn deeper and deeper. “My brother's body was found the night he called me, behind a bar in your town.”

“Wait… Danny was your brother?” Squealer’s mouth drops open.

“Danny died because of what he knew. He was so close to nailing him, Squealer. Hawker did this to him. I know he did.”

“And you have all that information Danny was putting together on him?” I swear I see concern on his face when I nod. He needn’t be worried. Hawker has no way of knowing about me. I’ve spent my entire career distancing myself from my family professionally. I wanted success on merit, not on my family name.

“So why the interest in the club?” Squealer looks suspicious again.

“Two reasons. Number one, Abby. I know she meant something to my brother because he asked me to look out for her if anything happened to him. He told me he’d left her with you guys for safekeeping.”
