“It's kinda lonely here. I was gonna bring Dylan into town to visit if you're not busy.” I’d like to think that she’s got her feet up, maybe reading Dylan a story and stroking her big round stomach, but in reality, I know she’ll be bustling around the house, trying to find something to do.

“I’d like that.” I balance the phone on my shoulder while I focus on sketching our son’s perfect button nose. I wonder if his little sister will have one the same.

“The engine management light came on the car this morning, you think it will be okay just to ride into town so you can look at it?”

“Absolutely not!” I snap back. I place my sketchbook down when I notice the new Deputy heading into the deli opposite. I’ve been meaning to speak with her about the kids in the woods for a while now, but she’s always busy. Now would be the perfect time since the studio’s empty.

“Ell, Squeal and Screw are taking care of the garage while Rogue’s away, call them up and have them check it out. Just take one of the club trucks until it’s fixed. Make sure one of them swaps Dylan’s seat over for you, though. It’s too heavy for you to be lifting,” I know it will cause her to roll her eyes. Hell, if I care, Ella told me that being alone and pregnant was the scariest time of her life. If I’d had any idea she was having my kid, I’d have been by her side, no matter what the cost. Now that I am, she can call me overprotective and accuse me of being intense. I don’t give a shit. I’m doing this the way it should have been done the first time around.

“I promise,” she assures me.

“Ella…” I catch her just before she cuts the call.

“Yep.”

“I’m sorry about Utah, I know you really wanted to go. It’s just with only five weeks left.”

“On this occasion, I think you might actually be right.” Her response surprises me. “It’s much harder this time around. My back’s killing me.”

“So take it easy, then.” I laugh, trying to locate the keys so I can lock up and shoot across the street to catch Alex.

“I am, but unless you want to visit me in a psych ward, I need to do something.”

“Then I’ll see you in a little while.” I smile to myself.

“Nyx. I love you. Even if you are a paranoid freak.”

“Love you too. Now, drive careful, and make sure you get one of the boys to look at the car.”

“Pinkie promise,” she tells me, cutting off. I toss my cell on top of my sketch pad and quickly head across the street to talk to Alex.

She comes rushing out of the dinner with her phone pressed to her ear and a deadly serious look on her face. I stand in front of her as she nods and tells the person on the other end of the line to stay calm before she hangs up.

“Nyx, I have an emergency. Whatever it is will have to wait,” she tells me, racing toward her patroller.

“What’s the issue?” I ask, chasing after her.

“Old man Clarkson just found one of the kids unresponsive in the woods. He’s called an ambulance, but I got to go check it out,” she tells me, looking worried as she gets into the driver’s seat.

“You know who’s supplying those kids, right?” I ask, feeling the anger building up inside me. Who the fuck does that asshole think he is? He tried screwing up Ella’s life, then Abby’s, and now this shit. I refuse to raise my kids in a town where cunts like Luke Robinson can get away with this kinda shit.

“I strongly suspect, but without evidence, I can’t—”

“You can’t, but I can.” Shaking my head, I back away from her.

“Nyx, don’t do anything stupid,” she calls after me, but she does nothing to try and stop me. She’s in too much of a rush, and as I race across the street to my bike. I hear her sirens come on, and her tires screech off in the opposite direction to where I’m heading.

The driveway of Luke Robinson’s parents’ mansion is full of poorly parked jeeps and fancy cars, and I park my bike right at the bottom of the stone steps that lead to the front door. Music and noise are coming from the back of the house, and I let myself through the side gate and follow the path around to the backyard.

I spot the fucker instantly, his arms sprawled out across his hot tub with a bitch on either side of him. Steam rises from the water's surface into the nippy autumn air.

The girls both look out of it, high on whatever he’s been pumping them with, while Luke chuckles like some Hugh Hefner wannabe with a cigar hanging out the side of his mouth.

The cocky snigger soon drops from his lips when he sees me.

“What is it with you turning up uninvited?” He decides to hide his fear and taunt me instead. I try to keep my calm by thinking about Ella and Dylan. This mother fucker won’t be the reason I go to jail again. But at the same time, I can’t let him get away with dealing to kids.

“Leave,” I speak directly to the girls, then focus my eyes back on him, all the rage inside me has traveled to my fists, and I’m just about ready to beat the fuck out of this piece of shit.
