“Please stay?” she asks again when she’s finished, this time much calmer. “Just until Nyx gets here,” she pleads.
“Sure, I’ll stay.” I drag the plastic chair from the corner of the room and place it beside her, letting her keep clenching my hand.
“Do you have any names picked out?” one of the nurses asks us both as she presses around on Ella's tummy.
“Oh, I’m not the one that did this,” I explain, the thought making me laugh.
“Sorry,” the nurse bats her lashes, her cheeks turning pink.
“You can call me Daddy if you want to though,” I wink.
The hard slap I get on the chest almost winds me, and I look at Ella.
“Can you just not?” She shakes her head in disgust as she puts that thing in her mouth again and sucks like hell.
“What is that?” I ask when her head falls back in relief. The nurse has just left, promising to get a doctor.
“Gas and air, it doesn’t take the pain away, but it makes you care less about it. Squealer, I really feel like I need to push.” Ella shifts uncomfortably on the bed.
“No, no.” I stand up and hold out my hand. “Don’t do that, not while there’s no one in here; she said she’d be right back.” I bolt for the door and swing it open, calling up the corridor for the nurse.
“Where is he?” Ella wails.
“You just focus on keeping that baby where it is while I try and figure that out,” I tell her, trying Nyx’s cell for what has to be the hundredth time.
“Squealer, please come here.” Ella reaches her hand out to me, and I let out a long sigh, giving up all hope of being rescued and go to her.
“I can’t do this, Squealer. I’m really scared, and she’s coming too soon… I need Nyx.” Her whole body shakes as she grabs my arm and starts to strain.
“Ella, I told you not to do that. Stop it.” She doesn’t listen. Why isn't she fucking listening to me? “Ella, I demand you stop that right the fuck now.”
“I can’t. I have to.” I quickly press the emergency button above her head and pick up the mouthpiece for myself, sucking hard at it. Turns out she’s right. This shit really does make you not give a shit, for a few seconds anyway.
When a woman in a white coat steps through the door, I breathe a sigh of relief. “Ella Carson.” She smiles warmly, looking at the chart in her hand. “I hear you're ready to have a baby.”
“No, I need my husband to be here.” Ella snatches the oxygen away from me and practically bites on it.
“Babies wait for no one.” The doc laughs to herself as she lifts up the sheet covering Ella's bottom end and then pulls the stirrups around. “Ankles up, and when you feel a contraction, give a nice long push.”
“Holy shit,” Ella screams as she grabs my shirt and drags me closer to her, clutching me at the most awkward angle while she pushes.
The door bursts open, and all eyes go to Nyx. A shocked, worried, covered in fucking blood Nyx.
“Jesus El, I’m sorry. I was… I got Screwy’s text when I got back to the studio and came straight here.”
“I swear to god, if I wasn’t trying to push a human out of me, I would be killing you right now.” She releases me to scold him, and I step out of the way as he charges on over. He takes her head in his hands and kisses her tenderly on the forehead, and when I look at his crimson-stained hands and the state of his shirt, I raise my eyebrows at him.
“I’ll explain later.” He shakes his head as he entwines his fingers between Ella’s.
“I’m here now. It’s gonna be okay,” he whispers into her sticky hair.
“Good luck with that.” I wave my finger down at Ella's legs as I back out of the room, and I’m almost at the door when Ella wails again.
“That’s right, keep pushing. I can see the baby's head crowning,” the doctor encourages her, and I don’t know if it’s curiosity, or just plain stupidity that has me looking down. But the minute I see it, I know that I’ll never unsee it.
“Squealer, get your fucking eyes off my wife's vagina!” Nyx shouts at me while doing his best to comfort her.
I feel my stomach rise into my throat and get the hell out of that room before pussy gets ruined for me forever.
