“Yep,” she nods, her eyes staring down at the piss stick on my table. She can’t even look at me, and I got no fucking words. Zilch.

I have to say something, the silence is too long, too awkward.

“I…” I try to form some words together, but once again, she beats me to it.

“You don't have to worry about it. I’m gonna take care of it. I’ll make an appointment at the clinic.” She starts moving toward the door, leaving the test where it is, and her keys drop out of her fumbling hands and crash onto the wood floor. I move to help her pick them up but she holds up her hand for me to back away.

“I got to go. I’ll catch up with you later,” she tells me, straightening herself up and heading out the door in such a rush that she leaves her jacket behind.

I should go after her, but I feel rooted to the fucking floor. Her words have hit me harder than any bullet or fist I’ve ever taken.

So, instead, I slump into the seat at the table and ignore the smell of burning eggs as I stare at the plastic stick in front of me.

Screwy eventually comes out to join me, taking the pan off the stove before he heads to the coffee machine. He fills me a mug with straight black and places it in front of me.

“Ain’t the first time someone had an accident happen around here,” he offers his words of fucking encouragement.

“It’s the first time I have,” I point out, standing up and grabbing my cut before I head out to my bike.

Alex is long gone, and when I start up my bike, my first thought is to go after her. To force her to talk about the bomb she just let go in my fucking kitchen.

But the little I’ve learned about females from the brothers around here with experience, is that when one needs her space, you give it. Talking to Alex when she’s like this ain’t gonna go well, and so I ride out of the club having no idea where I’m heading and needing to process.

What did she mean, she’d take care of it? I question myself as I ride the windy roads that lead in the opposite direction to town.

Did she mean get rid of, kinda take care of it? Is that what she wants? Or what she figured I want? How the fuck have we both been stupid enough to let this happen in the first place? I’ve been practicing safe sex efficiently since I lost my virginity at fourteen.

I ride for miles, asking myself the same questions and ignoring the buzzing in my pocket. It’s not till I’m back at the club an hour later that I realize it’s Abby who's been trying to get hold of me.

“What's up?” I call her straight back, wondering if there's a problem with Alex, her and Abby have got real close the past few weeks. Abby’s always at her place. Maybe she’s told Abby about the situation, and now the girl’s gonna try lecturing me about it.

“I was just wondering if you're free to help me move some stuff into Alex’s place. I spoke to Nyx and Brax last night, and they both think it’ll be good for me.”

“You want me to help you move your shit?” I check. She’s Ella’s best friend. Why is this my problem? I seem to be juggling those fuckers like fireballs.

“Well, I figured if Alex wanted anyone coming in and out of her place, she’d prefer for it to be you.” I can’t argue that, and I do need to face this situation head-on. Helping Abby will be a good excuse to see where Alex is at and if she’s ready to talk.

“I’ll bring the truck to your cabin in about half an hour,” I promise, hanging up the phone.

“Squealer.” Maddy rushes out of her cabin and waves me over.

What now…?

“Squeal, I was looking at some of the addresses in the file, trying to build a list of people who might offer up some information,” she starts to explain. “This morning, I checked out some CCTV from this apartment building over in Colorado Springs. Danny had loads of photos of Hawker going in and out when he was in town, so I thought I’d check in on the activity there over the past few days.”

“And…” Jesus, I hope this long assed story is heading somewhere.

“Look who I got coming out of there yesterday morning.” She holds out the tablet in her hand for me to look at the CCTV still.

“Mother fucker,” I utter, recognizing the person straight away. A baseball cap and a hood ain’t enough to hide a traitor.

“Chop,” Maddy confirms as if I needed fucking telling.

“Jessie and Troj have already left to check it out. Skid rode out early this morning with Thorne, and I can’t get hold of him. But I just figured you should speak to Alex and explain the situation. Make sure she doesn’t do any investigation of her own that might put her in danger. She’s really committed to finding Hawker, she’d chase any lead she got without question.”

“Did she talk to you?” I ask defensively. Alex and Maddy have spent a lot of time on this Hawker case together, maybe she’s confided in her about all this other stuff too.

“No, but we know Chop and women don’t exactly mix well together. I know Alex can handle herself, but I wouldn’t want to put her up against him.”
