“And you think Grimm will be okay with this?” Troj checks.

“Grimm don't got a choice either,” she smiles wickedly.

“You don’t have a bike,” Troj makes another valid point.

“I don’t, but Skid has three.” She bats her lashes at him.

“Take the shovelhead it’s in the lock-up behind the garage, keys are in the filing cabinet.“ He smirks at her.

“You clear it with Prez and Grimm, you're in,” Troj tells her.

Rogue jumps on her feet like a little girl told she’s going to the candy store, and I don't hang around to witness what Grimm's reaction will be. I head out to my bike and burn off down the track toward Alex’s place. It’s gonna be one hell of a fight to bring her in, but I’m going in swinging if that’s what it takes to protect her.

Her place is in darkness when I pull up outside, but I knock on the door anyway. I don’t like the fact Hawker went to the station. Of all the places for him to go in this town, why there? He knows he’s a wanted man, or he wouldn’t have been under the radar for all these months. To go to the station made no sense at all unless he knew that Alex was investigating him.

“Alex,” I call her name, banging the door harder. Until eventually a light comes on, and the door swings open.

“Jesus Squealer, I told you I don’t want to talk about it,” she barks at me angrily. It's hard to keep my mind on the reason I’m here when she’s looking so angry, and hot as fuck at the same time. Especially since she’s wearing the band tee I left here a few days ago.

“I didn't come here to talk to you about the…” I can't say the word, but my eyes fall to her flat stomach as she consciously pulls the hem of my T-shirt lower over her thighs. “I need you to not argue and just come with me,” I lean my shoulder against her door frame so she can’t shut me out.

“As if I’m just gonna come with you in the middle of the night, with no explanation.” She hangs her head sideways and looks back at me like I’m crazy.

“That's exactly what you’re gonna do because Hawker is in town, and I need you to be somewhere I know you're safe before I go help the others look for him.”

“I’m safe here,” she argues back at me. “I came into town to find him, I’m not running scared because he showed up.”

“Yeah, well it ain't just you, you gotta be thinking about now is it?” I point out, and she immediately slams the door shut on me, not giving a shit that it smashes into my shoulder. I can’t even force the damn thing back open in case I fucking hurt her.

“I’ll wait out here all night if I have to,” I shout through the door, banging my fist hard at the wood. The light goes back out, and I’m left out with nothing but the rain that's started falling heavy.

I slam my fist into the pillar on her porch and groan. She’s putting me in a position where I’m choosing between her and my club. Every second I’m here, I’m letting them down by not being out there searching. But I’m going fucking nowhere. I’ll sit on Alex’s porch step all night if I have to, because if keeping guard here is what it takes to keep her safe, then here is where I’ll be.

I storm back to my room and get under the covers. How dare he think he can turn up here and drag me back to his club with all the other abiding bitches, and using the fact I’m pregnant to make me feel bad. Low fucking blow. That shouldn’t even be a factor because I’m not having this baby!

My phone vibrates on my bedside table, and I choose to ignore it. Squealer can sit outside in the rain all night if he wants. I never asked him to. But then I think of Abby, and the text I sent her a few hours ago, what if she needs me to pick her up? Turning on my side lamp, I quickly check the caller ID. It is Abby, and I immediately feel guilty for being too wrapped up in my own drama to think about her.

“Hey, sorry I was just—”

“Officer Monroe.” The voice on the other end of the phone doesn’t belong to Abby. It’s male, slick, and charming, and it sends an instant tingle through my spine.

“Who is this?” I ask, sitting up from my bed and opening the top drawer, where I keep one of my guns.

“You should know, you’ve been working hard to track me down.” I can hear the snigger in his voice, and my heart stops when I realize this is it. I'm talking to the man who took my brother’s life.

“Where are you, you son of a bitch?” Getting up out of bed, I start getting dressed.

“Now is that any way for the Deputy Sheriff of this lovely little town to greet a visitor? Your pretty little friend was much more welcoming.”

Abby! Shit, he’s calling me from Abby’s phone.

“If you hurt her—”

“Relax, I didn’t come here to hurt anyone, but since you’ve been trying so hard to find me. I figure we should get acquainted.”

“Whatever problem you have with me, we’ll sort out between us, but you have to leave Abby out of this. She’s just a girl.” I swallow back any fear I have for myself. I have no idea how he got to Abby, or how long he’s been watching to know that she’s important, but I made my brother a promise to protect her.

“Do you know the storage yard, just off Hunterton Road?” Hawker speaks calmly.
