“That can’t be fucking true, Suzie, because he’s my best friend, and you’re my fucking sister. You married a god damn Bastard. Tell her she’s talking shit, Tac.” He looks to his friend, who appears to be as deflated as the woman.

“You sure?” He ignores Thorne and asks her directly, with a much softer tone to his voice than usual.

“I’m sure,” she nods back, and I watch Tac breathe a long, deep breath before he turns his attention to Thorne.

“Thorne—”

“No.” Thorne cuts him off, shaking his head and staring at his best friend like he’s just stabbed him in the chest. “Don’t you dare fucking tell me that you and her…”

“Thorne…” Suzie reaches her hand out to try to calm him down, but he pushes her away.

“You fucked my sister?” His attention is all on Tac, and he looks like he could swing for him any moment.

“It wasn’t like that.” Tac shakes his head

“Then tell me how the fuck it was?” Thorne’s lost all his cool, and when his slightly graying hair flops over his eyes, he quickly pulls it back.

“I was in love with her,” Tac admits, looking like she just swallowed all his pride.

“What the fuck did you just say?” Thorne moves into Tac’s space, forcing his nose into the side of his face aggressively.

“I said I loved her,” Tac repeats, this time loud enough for everyone to hear.

Thorne shocks us all when he throws back his head and drops his forehead back hard into the side of Tac’s face, knocking him off his stool and onto the floor.

“Then you better sort out your shit… Brother.” He spits the last word out of his mouth viciously before storming out of the club.

Tac pulls himself up off the floor and gets himself back together.

“You got somewhere we can talk in private?” he looks to Prez awkwardly.

“Ladies’ room’s vacant,” Maddy speaks up because Prez is speechless. And Squealer reaches over the bar and grabs a bottle of Jack, handing it over to Tac before he leaves.

“It ain’t every day a man learns he’s a father,” he points out.

Tac takes it and nods appreciatively, then taking the woman’s hand in his, like it’s always belonged there, he leads her out the barroom doors.

“Wow.” Maddy slides off the bar, her blue eyes still wide from the shock of the last few minutes.

“You see what you signed yourself up for?” Jessie looks at me and smiles. “Welcome to the family, darlin’.”

“Ain’t that the priest we were locked up in county with five years ago?” Skid asks me under his breath as Squealer rushes to join me at the top of the aisle with a red-faced old man following behind him.

“Is that…?”

“Yep. I tracked him down at the Black Pearl. He’s only had a couple of lines, and we owe him a dance, but…”

“You had one job, Squealer.” I slide my hand over my face. I knew leaving this to him was a bad idea.

“Yeah, and I’ll remind you that I had no time to pull this together. Priests ain’t easy to come by these days, especially ones prepared to come here,” he points out, taking his position beside me and slapping Skid on the back. “Thanks for stepping in, man.” Squeal straightens his tie and takes a breath to relax himself.

“Weren’t like this was gonna get started without the priest,” Skid points out, moving to join Prez and the rest of the club brothers in the congregation. It’s weird to see Thorne and Tac sitting apart. Things have been tense ever since Thorne’s sister showed up and dropped her bombshell.

I don’t know what was discussed after. Tac’s been tight-lipped about it, and no one has seen Thorne’s sister since. I just hope it can be resolved between them.

“You nervous?” Squeal asks me. He’s twitchy. I can tell by the way he’s shifting on his feet.

“I’m fine. But what’s with you?” I check, lowering my tone when Tommy hits the button on Maddy’s laptop that makes the music come out of the speakers.
