PROLOGUE

LAKYN

If you had told me as a child, with my Little Red Riding Hood cape covering my back, the oversized hood falling over my forehead, that Halloween would change my life, I would’ve laughed. With my pumpkin pail gripped in my sweaty little grip, my head would’ve cocked to the side, and I would’ve asked…

How?

From the sweet candy which makes my teeth ache and my tongue dry?

Maybe it would be by the old men who gush over my costume too closely, their eyes slightly too prodding?

Or possibly, it’s the haunted houses me and my friends go to every year. The overly decorated homes that turn an average neighborhood into a place where any dreams could come true.

It isn’t the fairy tales which bring me joy.

It’s the darkest night of the year, when we can thrive in the creepy and wicked, binging on movies that make our hearts race, or dressing up as the most dangerous villains, yet feeling like the heroes.

Though none of those things are why Halloween changed my life that fateful night.

It was supposed to be just another Halloween night, with a bit too much to drink, an uncomfortable costume, and hours with my friends which I would remember for the rest of my life.

This was a night I would remember forever.

Though, it wasn’t because it ended in laughter.

It was because it ended inblood.

CHAPTER ONE

LAKYN

Halloween Night

“Where are we going?” I pant as I dive headfirst into the Jeep. My costume slides up my thighs, revealing the dark lace garters attached to my stockings. I tug the hem of my dress down as my shoulder knocks against the fabric seat. A grunt shoots from my lungs, and I roll over, sliding next to Posie.

“After Dark” by Mr.Kitty blares through the speakers, and as I stare at the other villains next to me, I can barely think, or hear, or even breathe.

“They’re at the docks. Shit is going down!” Eloise’s feet punch the gas before my door is fully closed behind me. Her tires screech against the pavement as she speeds out of the parking lot of the cabin in the woods. The black horns over her red hair make her look like a true maniac as her eyes narrow, fingers gripping the steering wheel as she leans forward and cuts quickly onto the main road. The madness on her face reminds me of Cruella Deville from 101 Dalmatians.

My hip slams against the door from whiplash, and my black fingernails dig into the seat as we fly through our small town of Hellcrest Heights. The windows are lowered, and as the wind whips through the Jeep, I brush stray hairs from my updo away from my face. I’m dressed as the Evil Queen fromCinderella.

We’re all villains tonight.

My three best friends and I all decided to become the bad people of the fairy tales.

Eloise is dressed as Maleficent, Posie is Cruella, and Vienna is Ursula (with legs). We look fucking wild, andlike bad asses.

“Did Archer say what was going on?” I grip the back of Eloise’s seat, leaning forward as the world passes us by. Her hair blows in my face, and I bat it away with the back of my hand.

Vienna turns around from the passenger seat, her makeup bright, her lips blood red to match the evil sea villain, though she looks panicked. “I think Zane is there, Lakyn.”

My stomach bottoms out, and I release Eloise’s headrest, leaning back until my spine hits my seat. “What?” I gasp.

Zane isn’t my boyfriend, though he could be, in time. We’ve been seeing each other casually, and we’ve gone on a few dates, but it hasn’t been serious.

I was with him tonight, and it was going well. We were dancing, and drinking. We even snuck a few kisses in the corner of the house, but then he disappeared, and I had no clue where he went.

Now I know.
