His skin grows impossibly paler. “What do you want? Why are you here, then?”

“I am here for Lakyn. I am here because of Lakyn.”

“Are you one of the boys? Archer? Creed? Kyler?” His eyes narrow further. “Or maybe you’re that bastard Rei—”

I don’t let him get any further, my knife swinging forward, stabbing straight into his abdomen. His eyes widen as he chokes, coughs, sputters, saliva flying from his mouth.

“I am none of them.” My head tilts to the side. “Or maybe I’m all of them. You’ll never fucking know.” I twist the blade before pulling it out. Dark crimson drips from the blade. His hand goes to his abdomen, as if he can hold the blood inside his body.

I plunge the knife forward again, straight through his hand, right into his stomach once again.

He lets out a scream, and my drenched, gloved hand slaps against his mouth. “You are going to cause me trouble, aren’t you?”

He cries, tears flooding down his cheeks and onto my glove.

“I don’t want your tears. They mean nothing. Your feelings mean absolutely nothing,” I growl, tearing the knife from his stomach.

Pulling the knife out, I bring it up to his neck, pressing the reddened tip against his jugular. “Lakyn deserved better than what you gave her. Than how you treated her. She might be fucked up. She might be a killer. But I’ll tell you what, Barnett.”

He weeps, choking as he begins sliding to the floor. I let his ass slap to the ground, the water tinged pink and splashing against the sides of the glass walls.

“Lakyn will never be even close to as fucked up as you. And that’s because I’m going to save her from you. Starting now.”

I drag the knife across his neck, slicing right above his Adam’s apple. Blood pours from his skin, and I pull my hand away, listening as his choking turns garbled, and his eyes are no longer pleading, but losing light.

I wait until his body slouches, the heaving of his chest stilling as his body lies motionless, blood still leaking from his body as the water pelts his skin.

Bringing my knife up to the spray, I rinse it off before I shut the shower door.

Another one done. Another one gone.

This is her punishment, and her reward.

I’m saving her from the monster.

While also punishing her for being one.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

LAKYN

The sound of my phone ringing rouses me from sleep, and I shove my pillow over my ears until it stops. My body sinks back into the mattress, my mind drifting back into the darkness, when the buzzing starts up again, and I want to scream from the top of my lungs.

I whip the pillow onto the ground, rolling over and grabbing my phone, sliding until it connects.

“What!” I snap.

“Lakyn.” George’s voice is severe, nervous and distraught.

I frown, pulling it away to check the time.

Six-thirty in the fucking morning.

“This better be an emergency, George,” I groan, my back flopping against my mattress.

“This is certainly an emergency. I’m on my way to your house. Please be ready in a few minutes.”

My eyes open, sleep leaving me quickly.
