His eyes widen, then narrow. “What the fuck did you just say?” he snaps.

I clench my hands into fists, my nails digging into my palms. “He came to me.” My voice is barely audible, only a whisper.

He cocks his head to the side, and the temperature in the room cools. “When?” His voice is a bullet through the silent air.

My heart pounds in my ears, and I lock my knees so I don’t fall to the ground. “Just once. After Eloise was attacked.” The lie slips effortlessly from my lips.

He steps closer, until his toes brush mine. “What did he want?” His voice sounds dangerous, so lethal. Goosebumps break along my skin, and I straighten my spine, not wanting to show any fear, or weakness.

Or lies.

“I don’t know,” I whisper, my throat closing.

He narrows his eyes. “So, he just paid you a visit, and he didn’t have a fucking word to say?”

Yeah, he did, and he fucked me into oblivion.

“I don’t remember most of it.” I swallow over my nerves. “It honestly could’ve been a dream.”

He watches me, his jaw ticking. “And why didn’t you say anything? Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I don’t know,” I whisper.

Lie, lie, lie.

He blinks slowly, his thick, long eyelashes brushing against his sharp cheekbones.

Suddenly, he leans down, his arms curling behind my thighs. He lifts me in the air, and my arms grip the back of his neck while my feet hook behind his back.

He moves swiftly, walking through the house and up the stairs to his bedroom. I watch his expression, hoping to get a good read on his emotions.

But it’s impossible, as he’s a blank canvas, unreadable.

“Are you lying to me, Lakyn?” he murmurs once he gets into his room.

My fingers tighten around his neck. “Lying about what?”

He kicks his bedroom door shut, stalking toward his bed. His arms release me, and I fall out of his hold, my back dropping against the mattress. Bending down, his arms trail my goosebump-laden skin. “Anything, Lakyn.Everything. Would you fucking lie to me?” he growls.

I shake my head, my legs tightening their hold around his waist. I bring my hands up to his hair, my chest cracking in half from my lie, but telling the truth would be hurting him.

It would be risking him. Risking me.

I refuse to put him in harm’s way.

And selfishly, I want to protect the man in the mask. The man who could have hurt me multiple times, but he’s done nothing of the sort.

He saved me.

He took my horrible dad from me, for me.

I kill because of you. I kill for you.

“I won’t lie to you, Reign,” I whisper.

His eyes probe mine, fingers go to my hair, and he threads through my strands, tilting my head to the side.

“The depths I would go for you, Lakyn. To protect you. To save you. Do you realize that?” he murmurs, inches from my face. His eyes have darkened, black pools that are endless.
