My heart jumps inside my chest as I stare at him, tears instantly forming in my eyes as sadness clutches onto my bones. I want to weep right here, but stop myself as the look he gives me freezes me to my seat.

His jaw is set, his eyes narrowed into slits as he saunters to his side of the white table. A glass barrier separates us, our chairs a navy blue and plastic, beaten and scratched.

He sits down, staying a distance from the table. He crosses his arms in front of him, watching me with a blank stare.

I lean forward, lifting the black phone that’s attached to the wall. I stare at him, my brow furrowing when he does nothing but continue to sit and stare at me, looking so disinterested, so angry with me.

I’m sorry, I mouth.

He shakes his head, going to stand up.Done with me.

“Wait!” I scream, my hand slapping at the glass between us. He freezes, glancing over his shoulder at me.

I shake the phone at him, tears blurring my vision. “Please. Please talk to me,” I choke, not knowing if he can even hear me.

His jaw clenches, his sharp cheekbones creating shadows down his face.

“Please,” I whisper.

He turns around, sitting down in the chair. Pressing his forearms to his knees, he leans forward as his other hand grabs the phone. He holds it out in front of him, as if he doesn’t even want to talk.

My eyes fall over his face, to the bruises that are forming. It’s not terrible, though enough to make me wince and for my heart to ache. There’s discoloration on his cheek and under his eye, a small amount of dried blood beneath his nose. Otherwise, he looks okay.

I lift the phone to my ear. “Please talk to me, Reign. Please listen to me,” I plead with him.

He does after a moment, lifting it lazily to his ear. “What do you want, Lakyn?”

He sounds so removed, so… hurt.

The tears are instant as they rush down my cheeks, the pain in my chest nearly debilitating.

“It’s not what you think it was, Reign.”

His lip curls up, his eyes spearing mine. I would be dead if he had the chance. His head cocks to the side. “So, it didn’t look like he stuck his fingers into my girl’s cunt?”

Shame makes my cheeks flame, and I want to drown in my misery. “It’s not what you think. It’s not like I wanted it,” I gasp, bending over, my hand clutching my chest.

His arm slams on the counter in front of him, and he leans forward, until his breath fogs the glass between us.

“You say you didn’t want it, but you didn’t fight him. You never fucking fight him, Lakyn.” He shakes his head, clear disappointment in me. “I should have fucking killed him. I should’ve killed my best friend, and I wish I would’ve.”

I wipe my cheeks, but it’s useless, because only more tears replace them.

“Reign, I don’t want you to kill him,” I whimper.

He laughs, humorlessly. “Of course you don’t want me to kill him. You want him, Lakyn.”

“No, I don’t!” I shout, not caring in the slightest. “I don’t want him. Archer is my friend. My best friend, but that’s all he is. I love you, Reign,” I choke, not having said those words in three years. “I’m in love with you.”

He stands suddenly, his hand slapping the table. It booms, and I can feel the vibrations on my side. “Don’t fucking lie to me!” he roars, and I don’t need the telephone to hear him. His voice was crystal clear, slicing through the air like bullets that hit straight into my heart.

I stand up, leaning over the counter. “I’m not lying, Reign! I love you so fucking much! Why can’t you see that?”

“Why can’t you see that he is in love with you?” he bellows.

“I don’t care!” I scream.

“He fucking touched you!” he roars, baring his teeth at me. He’s livid, his face red, and I don’t blame him.
