I freeze, my head tilting to the side. “What do you mean?”

He smirks. “It’s Halloween tomorrow, Lakyn. Has shit ever been calm for us?”

I let out a small laugh. “No, I guess you’re right.”

He nods, his hand dragging up to the back of my neck. He pulls me to him, his eyes hooking onto mine. “Come over tonight,” he murmurs.

I want to. I need to. I wonder if Archer has gotten out yet, and the question burns at the tip of my tongue.

Reign knows me too well, and already knows my thoughts. “Archer is home, and I suggest you talk to him before tomorrow night.”

I narrow my eyes. “Why before tomorrow night?”

His fingers squeeze the back of my neck. “Because, the last thing I’m sure you want is another party where he ends up on his back with a bloody face.”

I frown, shaking my head.

He releases me, his fingers lingering on my neck a moment before he takes a step back. “For the record, Archer will always be my boy, and I don’t want to see him like that either.” His eyes grow fierce, and my insides heat. “But when it comes to you, Lakyn, I’ll kill my own blood to keep you for myself. A friend is the least of my worries.”

I swallow, knowing it’s the truth.

“I’ll see you tonight, Lakyn. Don’t keep me waiting.”

I inhale the crisp fall air, watching him turn around, heading to his car parked along the curb. I stand there, my fingers wrapped around the straps of my backpack. Once he pulls away, I exhale my breath, nerves running through me at what tonight will bring.

I’m nervous.

Wrapping my fingers around the knob, I begin turning at the same moment the wooden door swings open.

Creed stands there, a blank look on his face. “I contemplated leaving, but I really don’t want to miss the hell that could potentially break loose, so I decided to stick around.”

My eyes narrow. “Thanks for the support, Creed,” I snap.

He shrugs his shoulders.

His jaw clenches, and he steps aside, giving me a clear entrance into the house. “Kyler’s barely been here since the guys got back, Reign walks around like he wants to murder someone, and Archer hasn’t said a fucking word. Not one. I’d say, yeah, it’s bad.”

I swallow, guilt consuming me. “Oh,” I whisper.

He reaches out, grabbing onto my arm and pulling me inside. He shuts the door, his fingers flicking the lock. “Get it over with, Lakyn. No use dragging this shit out any longer.”

I toe my shoes off, heading down the hall and into the kitchen. Kyler sits on the counter, a beer clutched between his fingers. He tips it to his lips, taking a sip, not saying a word to me.

“Hi, Kyler,” I whisper, stepping up to the counter. My fingers clutch the edge, and I’m close enough that I can smell the heavy scent of liquor on him. “Are you mad at me?”

His eyes cut to mine. “I’m mad at the world, Lakyn,” he growls.

My lips pull down, my chest feeling heavy, weighted. “I don’t want you to be upset with me.” My face twists, and I bite the inside of my cheek so I don’t cry. “You guys mean so much to me.”

His chin lifts, and I know he wants to tear into me. Sliding off the counter, he sets his drink aside as he stalks closer. He keeps his distance, but enough that I can feel the anger emanating off him.

“I don’t hate you, Lakyn, but I hate what you’re doing to us.”

My heart drops. “What am I doing to you guys?” I whisper.

“Tearing us apart. Making us love you. Making us want you.” He steps closer, his finger lifting as he brushes my tear that I didn’t know had fallen. “I want you to love you who love, Lakyn, but I don’t want our family to be torn apart in the process.”

I shake my head, holding my breath to keep the sob at bay. “I don’t want us to be torn apart either,” I croak.
