He bends down, pressing his lips against mine, an angry possessiveness in his fingers as he holds them against my neck. He wants to choke me, steal my breaths, maybe even my heart. He wants me to be with him, yet he knows we aren’t meant to be. He’s too much of a player, has too much fun with all the girls at school.

He selfishly wants me to stand by him, when he would never solely stand by me.

Pulling away, I can feel a warm body come up on my back, and my eyes close when Archer smiles.

“How long do you think he could keep us away?” Kyler murmurs into my neck.

I clench my hands into fists at my sides as the guys do what they always do. Pull me in, keep me close. They love me, yet their love is dangerous, and possibly lethal, if any one of us missteps.

“He’ll hurt you,” I whisper, pained at the thought. “Don’t let him hurt you. Just listen to him, and back up just a little.” I’m pleading now, glancing over my shoulder, my eyes clashing with Kyler’s. They spear me with a blazing fire which could burn me where I stand.

His fingers trace the slender column of my neck. “He might be one of us, but you areourLakyn. You will always be our Lakyn.”

My heart pounds, creating an ache between my ribs. “I would never let any of you go.” And it’s the truth.

Our love is toxic.

“Our boy won’t listen to us. When it comes to you, it seems we’re all a little bit crazy. So do us a favor, baby Lake,” Kyler rasps, the backs of his fingers trailing down my arm, creating a shiver to ripple up my skin. He leans down, his lips caressing the back of my neck. “Reign will never own you solely, not while any of us are alive. So you better tell him we won’t be letting you go, or we might have a war between us, with you stuck in the middle.”

My breath seizes in my chest, and my lips part, ready to shoot him a retort, when Posie stands there, a sad look on her face. “Everything okay?”

Both Kyler and Archer step back from me, and I can finally breathe.

Archer chuckles. “No, not really. Lakyn was just choosing sides, and we were blurring them for her once again. So, no, no problems.” He straightens, narrowing his eyes at me before he walks out of the room.

Kyler shakes his head, leveling me a look as he brushes past Posie without another word.

Posie stares at me, knowing how much they mean to me. My jaw clenches, my eyes watering as I bring my fingers to my neck, feeling the phantom touch of them both.

They left a mark, just as they intended.

“I’m so sorry, Lakyn,” she whispers, and I slide down his dresser, until my butt hits the ground. Leaning forward, my forehead presses against my knees as a soft hiccup works its way through my chest.

“I don’t want to hurt them,” I whisper, wiping my eyes.

She squats down beside me, and her fingers go to my hair, brushing the messy strands away from my damp face. “You can’t help who you love.”

I shake my head. “They’re just possessive and they don’t want to see me with anyone else,” I whisper.

“They’ll have to get over it. Reign is your story, and it’s not over yet.”

“He’s going to hurt me again,” I whisper, glancing up at her.

She smiles, shrugging slightly. “If he does, you’ll have the rest of us to fall back on.”

I glance toward the open doorway. “Maybe not the guys.”

Her fingers go to my face, and she wipes beneath my eyes. “The guys might be pissed right now, but they’ll get over it. It’s what they do. They get angry, they rage about you, and then the dust settles, and we all go back to how things always are. They’re growly and rude and protective, but they love us, and even if we give our hearts to someone else, their love will never change.”

I nod, knocking another tear over the ledge. It slips down my cheek, rolling to my chin.

My heart aches for the man who is anything but good for me, while the dark part, the depraved part of me, still can’t escape my thoughts of the man with the mask.

The one I’m afraid I’ll never be freed from, and the worst part of me doesn’t want to be.
