Blinking, she looks around, and finally clarity hits as she sees me standing beside her.

She lets out a scream, swinging her arms and legs as she attempts to escape.

“Let me go! Let me go! Please!” she cries, her fight leaving her quickly as sobs rack her body.

“Let her go!” Lakyn cries, stepping up to me.

I raise my blade again, pointing toward her. “Stay where you are, Lakyn,” I command.

I pull Steph upright. “Shut the fuck up,” I growl.

She’s quick to quiet down, her body letting loose terrifying tremors as she stares at me. Her teeth chatter. “What are you going to do to me?”

I glance up at Lakyn. “Do you know who she is, baby Lake?” My altered voice makes her shiver, and she narrows her eyes at the woman in my arms.

“I don’t… I mean… I don’t know. She looks familiar, but I don’t know who she is.”

I dig into my pocket, pulling out Steph’s phone and going to her Instagram. I scroll down through her feed, until I get to one of her most recent videos.

“Come here,” I command, and Lakyn instantly follows my order, walking up to me quietly, slowly.

I press Play on the video, turning it around as Steph’s voice blares through the silence.

“…Lakyn Ashford totally killed that guy. I mean, come on. I saw her with him at the Halloween party. She was the last person to be seen with him. They were grinding together in the corner of the room. I remember it like it was yesterday. Kid Cudi was playing, and they were in some hot, heated moment. And then they both disappeared. Where did they go? No one knows, but when his body shows up the next morning, and she’s gone, I think it’s obvious, don’t you?” She shakes her head. “Lakyn Ashford killed that kid, and I think her friends helped her with it.”

Lakyn’s face is pale, her body ramrod straight as she watches the video with wide, bewildered eyes.

I scroll up, going to another one.

“…I did some digging today, and I think I found something,” she says, her voice barely a whisper. “I went down to the water, and there was, like… blood or something on the rocks. Was it his? What happened down there at the water?” She shivers. “I have no clue where Lakyn went, but I’m going to find out.”

Lakyn swallows audibly, her face turning red.

I scroll up to the top, to one of the most recent videos.

Steph is at the party the other night, her face flushed in intoxication, her eyes bright with glee. “Lakyn Ashford is back in Hellcrest Heights, and we have murders happening! Can you say coincidence, or what? I know she’s the one behind this. A girl from school just got murdered tonight, and everyone is panicking. And guess who I saw stumbling out of the woods?” She smiles. “You’ve got that right. Lakyn Ashford, folks. I’m going to fucking nail her, and I can’t wait until I do.”

Lakyn’s jaw grinds in anger, and my smile grows. Finally, we’re turning from sad to pissed. Just as I wanted her.

I turn the screen off on Steph’s phone, shoving it into my pocket.

“I have another surprise for you,” I mumble.

“I don’t think I want to see it,” she whispers.

Bending down, I reach behind the tree trunk. Extending my arm, my gloved fingers are hooked under the back of her red heels.

The heels she lost last year.

Lakyn gasps. “Where did you find those?” she snaps, reaching out and grabbing them. “Holy shit. I thought I lost these.”

Steph lets out a cry, her entire body seizing in my grip.

“Where’d you get them, Steph?”

“Wait,” Lakyn snaps, bending over so her eyes meet Steph’s. “You had my heels?”

Steph narrows her eyes. “Yeah, at the murder scene, you fucking psycho.”
