“Give her more sedatives.”

I feel a sting on my arm, and then the room begins to spin. I’m going to be sick.

I can’t breathe!

The men just laugh.

“Told you it would shut her up.”

When I feel a hand between my legs, I try in vain to scream, but nothing comes out.

“Layla, wake up!” Strong hands grip my shoulders firmly, shaking me. “Come on, honey, wake up.”

I shoot up into a sitting position, knocking my forehead into a hard, muscular chest. Jason sits back to give me room, but his hands are still on me, holding me steady.

Frantic, I search the dark shadows of the room for those awful men.

“What are you looking for?” Jason asks.

“They were here, just now. I heard them.”

“Who was here?”

“The ones who hurt me. They drugged me.” I rub my arm where the needle went in.

“There’s no one here but us, Layla.” He captures my hands and holds them tightly to his chest. “It was just a dream. You’re safe.”

I glance up at Jason, whose short, dark hair sticks up in places. “I’m sorry I woke you.”

“Hey, it’s okay.” He releases one of my hands so he can brush the hair from my hot face. “Don’t move,” he says, frowning. He reaches over to switch on my bedside lamp, then studies my throat, tipping my chin up so he can see better in the dim light. “You scratched your neck.”

“I couldn’t breathe.”

He thinks you’re crazy.

Stop it.

He’s going to quit because you’re a nutjob.

“I said stop!”

Jason’s brow furrows for a split second until he realizes my outburst wasn’t directed at him. He sits back, putting some space between us. “Feeling better?”

“Yes.”

He pulls his phone from his pocket and checks my sugars.

I lie back down with a sigh. “I’m sorry I woke you.”

He brushes my hair back from my face. “You don’t need to apologize. I’m here to help you. Iwantto help.” He straightens my bedding. “Better?”

“Yes.”No.I always feel unsettled after a nightmare.

“Do you need anything?” he asks. “Some water maybe?”

“No, I’m fine.”Don’t leave me.

You’re pathetic. He’s paid to take care of you. He’s not doing it because he wants to.
