Shut up!

It’s all your fault.

“Layla?”

I hope you’re happy.

I wrap my arms around my torso and try to stop shaking. What if she’s right? What if he gets arrested and my parents fire him?

“Layla? Is everything all right?”

I don’t want another bodyguard. I want Jason. It’s not fair. None of this is his fault. He was just trying to protect me.

I told you, it’s your fault. He probably hates you now. You’ve probably destroyed his career.

My stomach churns at the thought that Jason might blame me. I would understand if he did.

I grab my earbuds from my backpack, shove them in my ears, and turn on some music. Closing my eyes, I try to block everything out and focus on the lyrics to the songs. It helps me drownherout.

I don’t know how much time has passed when I feel a gentle hand on my knee. When I open my eyes, I see Ian crouching beside my chair. Tyler’s right behind him, talking on his phone.

“Hey, sis.” Ian gently removes my earbuds. “Are you okay?”

“Ian.” My voice breaks, but I manage to maintain my composure. I throw my arms around my brother, and he wraps me in a bear hug.

“Hey, everything’s going to be okay,” he says. “Tyler’s on the phone right now with Jason’s boss.” My brother glances across the desk at Dr. Porter. “Thanks for watching out for my sister.”

The woman nods. “It was no problem. I’m happy to help.”

Ian turns back to me. “Can you tell me what happened?”

My voice shakes. “We were walking across campus when five guys ambushed Jason. One of them punched him several times in the face. You should have seen him, Ian. He knocked them all to the ground. He was incredible. Did you know he could fight like that?”

Ian smiles. “Yeah, I knew he could do that.”

“We have to help him.”

Tyler ends his call. “Troy Spencer is on his way to the police station. So is Shane. They’ll take care of Jason.”

“Who’s Troy?” I ask.

“Shane McIntyre’s attorney,” Ian says. “And now Jason’s.” He rises to his feet, then pulls me to mine. “There’s nothing we can do for Jason right now. Let’s get you home.”

“Do Mom and Dad know?” I ask.

Ian nods. “I told them. Dad’s in court all afternoon, but Mom’s taking off early. She’ll meet us at home.”

“Do you think they’ll fire him?”

Ian winces. “I’m not sure. It’s possible.”

“We’re dating.” I blurt the words out.

Ian’s green eyes widen in surprise. “Are you serious? Do Mom and Dad know?”

I nod. “Jason said Mom and Dad gave him their blessing. I haven’t had a chance to tell you.”

Tyler rolls his dark eyes. “Why does he get it so easy?”
