Page 123 of Claiming His Kiss

“Yes.”

The woman paused. “He’s with a client at the moment. I can take your name and number and have him give you a call.”

While it wasn’t what he wanted to hear, he gave the woman his name and number, then moved on to his own work.

Jeffery Bradshaw didn’t return his call until the end of the day. “Mr. Ross, I understand you’re calling about a case?”

“That’s correct. I understand you’re representing Tabitha Jacobson in her divorce.”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Ross. I can’t discuss my clients or the cases I’m currently working on. I’m sorry—”

“I want to cover the cost.”

There was a long silence on the other end. “I’m sorry?” This time, it was a question.

“Whatever Mrs. Jacobson owes you, now or in the future, I want you to send the bill to me.”

“Are you a relative or something?” he asked.

“No.”

“Then why?”

Daniel didn’t want to get into what he’d found out or why he’d gone digging in the first place. “Let’s just say I’m not a huge fan of Mr. Jacobson.”

When Daniel didn’t go on, Bradshaw took a different approach. “This could be a messy divorce. Lots of litigation. The cost could be quite high.”

“I’m aware of that.” Daniel paused to let that sink in. “Just send the bills to me and I'll make sure they’re paid.”

Again, there was a long silence. “What should I tell Mrs. Jacobson?”

He thought about it for a moment and remembered the conversation he’d had with Ali where he’d told her if she was a bad person, he must be the devil. A smile tugged at his lips. “Tell her she has a guardian angel.” He wanted to say something along the lines of ‘take him for everything he’s worth’, but he reined himself in.

Daniel hung up the phone a few minutes later after giving Jeffery Bradshaw an address where to send Tabitha Jacobson’s bills. He chuckled to himself, feeling a lot lighter knowing Jacobson wouldn’t be able to try and back his wife into a corner and settle for less than she deserved.

Shrugging into his jacket, he shut his computer down and picked up his briefcase. Ali was home waiting on him, and he couldn’t wait to see her.

There’d been no sign of her mother. No text. No phone calls. The woman was in the wind. And despite everyone and their brother being on social media these days, she had nothing. Bradley was right. She was a ghost when it came to her online presence.

Over the last month, Ali had begun leaving her mark on his home. It was little things. She’d added some candles to his living room and bought a dishtowel with some flowers on it to hang from his oven door. They brought a feminine touch to his house and it never failed to make him smile.

It had been years since he’d shared his space with someone else, but the little bumps they’d had were nothing compared to what he’d gained. She made his house feel like something more than a place he slept and worked and ate his meals.

Footsteps sounded on the steps and a moment later he saw her. She had her hair pulled back in a ponytail and some paint on her cheek.

Her smile lit up the room as she walked toward him. “Hey.”

He wrapped her in his arms and brushed a kiss against her lips. “Hey.”

“Dinner’s in the oven. It should be ready in about twenty minutes. I just need to make the salad—”

Daniel cut her off with another kiss, letting his hands roam down her back to cup her ass. She melted into him, digging her fingernails into his back. “I can work with twenty minutes.”

Then he picked her up and carried to his bedroom. There was a lot he could do in twenty minutes, and he planned on utilizing every second. Now, and for the rest of their lives.
